Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, CA - The Stockton Ports (26-42, 1-1) surrendered three home runs on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark as the San Jose Giants (41-27, 1-1) powered their way past the Ports, 7-1.
San Jose's Onil Perez hit a three-run home run with two outs in the third inning, while Matt Higgins and Anthony Rodriguez added solo blasts in the sixth.
The Ports starter Dheygler Gimenez (3-1) took the loss, despite going 5.2 innings and striking out four. He allowed all three of the long balls, leading to five earned runs.
The Giants tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth, courtesy of a Turner Hill two-RBI double.
Stockton mustered its lone run in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Tommy Stevenson, his fourth of the season.
San Jose got a rehab start from major-leaguer Alex Cobb, making his return back from a 15-day IL stint due to an oblique strain. The 35-year-old pitched 3.2 innings and struck out nine. His only mistake was the pitch Stevenson hit onto the berm in left.
Daniel Blair (6-1) received the win, pitching 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball. He scattered five hits while striking out five.
Stockton still has a chance to win the series on Sunday afternoon and the series finale starts at 2:09pm. The Ports send RHP Wander Guante (1-2, 5.23 ERA) to the mound opposite the Giants game one starter RHP Gerelmi Maldonado (1-0, 3.60). Tickets are available at stocktonports.com or by calling 209-644-1900.
