Stockton Thunder News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, in conjunction with the Stockton Unified School District (SUSD), has announced a partnership to launch a special initiative designed to encourage seniors within the SUSD to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

The announcement was made at a 1:00 p.m. news conference at Stockton Arena with Thunder head coach Chris Cichocki (Michigan Tech University product) and players James Bates (Quinnipiac University product) and David Rohlfs (University of Michigan product) present, along with Thunder president Dan Chapman and officials representing the Stockton Unified School District. Students within the SUSD who register and take the SAT exam this year will each receive a free ticket voucher to the Thunder vs. Ontario Reign game on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Stockton Arena.

"The Stockton Thunder is honored to be collaborating with Stockton Unified School District in such a critically important initiative," said Chapman. "The SAT is an important path to college and it's imperative that we, as a community, do anything we can to provide our young people with that opportunity."

"We are very fortunate to have a community partner like the Stockton Thunder, and their staff," Anthony Amato, Stockton Unified School District superintendent said. "They appreciate what we are trying to do for our students and have helped our cause in a really big way."

In addition, the Thunder will reward the highest SAT score for a student of each participating SUSD school with four free tickets to a future Thunder 2008-09 regular season game. The student who achieves the highest SAT score within the entire district will also receive an autographed jersey by the members of the 2008-09 Thunder team.

Last year, a total of nine percent of 4,500 students within the SUSD participated in taking the SAT examination, one of the key ingredients for a student's potential enrollment into a four-year college or university. As part of an initiative designed to encourage enrollment, the SUSD has agreed to fund each student's enrollment in SAT preparatory classes.

For the first time in the history of the district, each junior and senior high school student this year will have the opportunity to take the SAT exam, free-of-charge, which saves involved families $45 for the standard SAT "reasoning exam."
