The Mississippi Sea Wolves lost their preseason opener to the Charlotte Checkers by a score of 9-1 at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, N.C. on Friday night.
Charlotte exploded for four goals in the first period, with Jeff Kyrzakos opening the scoring for the Checkers during a delayed penalty at 8:49 as he redirected a point shot from Michael Busto past Sea Wolves goaltender Ryan Munce at 8:49. Veteran forward Mike Bayrack hammered in a goal at 10:10 of the first period while Mississippi's Justin Coutu was off for a high-sticking minor. The Checkers extended their lead to three goals when Dan McGoff took a cross-ice feed from Julien Brouillete and fired it past Munce at 13:07. The Sea Wolves surrendered a fourth goal at the 14:15 mark when Peter James Corsi poked the loose rebound of a shot from Ryan Hillier into the net after it trickled through Munce's pads.
Sea Wolves head coach Steffon Walby went shopping for goal scorers during the offseason, and one of his acquisitions, Mike Wirll, got the Sea Wolves on the board just 1:27 into the second period, as he stole a loose puck in the neutral zone, carried it past two Charlotte defenders, made a move to fool Charlotte goaltender Jeff Jakaitis and deposited the puck in the net, sliding it through the five-hole.
Maxime Boisclair restored Charlotte's four-goal lead when he took a back-door pass from Jeff Kyrzakos and roofed it over Ryan Munce's left pad at 5:35 of the second.
Munce yielded the net to rookie goaltender Justin Mrazek midway through the second period, after allowing five goals on 22 shots in 29:11 of work, while Charlotte's Jakaitis was replaced by former South Carolina Stingray Maxime Daigneault.
Mrazek made several clutch saves early after coming in, before Peter James Corsi tipped a shot from Kenny Smith past him for Charlotte's sixth goal and his second of the contest at the 19:23 mark of the second period.
Ryan Murphy and Matthew Ford chipped in goals just 20 seconds apart, at the 1:24 and the 1:44 mark respectively, and Jeff Kyrzakos notched his second of the game at 4:51 to cap the scoring.
Saturday, October 11 @ Augusta, 4-1 W
Alexandre Parent picked up a goal and two assists, Mike Berry notched two goals, and Ryan Munce made 16 saves in 31 minutes of work on Saturday evening as the Mississippi Sea Wolves closed their preseason with a 4-1 win over the Augusta Lynx in Augusta, Ga.
Rookie forward Parent cashed in on a wrist shot just 47 seconds into the first period when he fired from the top of the right wing circle and beat Augusta goaltender Joel Martin through the five hole to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead. The Sea Wolves power play drought ended when Martin couldn't corral the rebound of a shot from Parent and newcomer Mike Berry was there to chip it in to give the Sea Wolves a 2-0 lead at 7:19 of the first period.
Controlling play in the offensive zone for most of the second period, the Sea Wolves made it 3-0 when Berry redirected a centering pass from Ryan Cruthers past Martin with at 11:33.
Augusta got its' only goal of the evening when Dallas Steward redirected Art Femenella's high shot from the point of the ice and past Sea Wolves goaltender Tyler Sims, who replaced starter Ryan Munce midway through the second period.
Mathieu Melanson notched his first goal of the preseason when he broke down the right wing, pulled up at the top of the circle and launched a slap shot that beat Augusta's A.J. Bucchino over the left arm at 15:46 of the third period.
Ryan Munce made 16 saves on 16 shots in 31:33 of work to earn the win, while Tyler Sims made nine saves on 10 shots in 28:27 to earn a no-decision.
