
Reign Add Starling And Germain To Blue Line

ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign of the ECHL, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and the AHL Manchester Monarchs, announced today that they have signed Defensemen Chad Starling and Shawn Germain to the Reign 2008-09 roster. Per Club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Chad Starling enters his eighth season in the ECHL after completing the 2007-08 season with the Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones. Starling suited up with the Cyclones in 133 games netting six goals and 35 assists (41 points) in his time spent with the team. In 2007-08 Starling ended the regular season with a +48 rating and a finished the playoffs with a +10 rating in 10 games. He ranked first amongst his teammates in penalty minutes (88), first amongst defensemen in assists (20) and second amongst defensemen in points (22). Starling was named as the PaySourceUSA ECHL Plus Performer of the Month in February, 2008, when he finished with a +16 rating in 13 games.
The 6-foot 6-inch, Delisle, SK, native posted a +24 rating in 2006-07 and marked a +5 game in a win over Johnstown on Dec. 15, 2006. The 28-year-old D-man was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round (#114 overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Prior to skating for Cincinatti, Starling played in 154 games in the ECHL with the Peoria Rivermen (2001-05) scoring four goals and assisting on 31 others. He was the only player to play in all 72 games in 2005-06 with the Utah Grizzlies marking 17 points (3g, 14a). Starling experienced two stints in the AHL, one in 2003-04 when he suited up for two games with the Houston Aeros and the other in 2002-03 when he skated for the Worcester IceCats in 34 games.
Shawn Germain, 25, joins the Reign roster after spending the past two seasons (2006-08) with the Reading Royals playing under Reign Head Coach Karl Taylor. While with the Royals, Germain suited up for 133 games scoring four goals, assisting on 21 others (25 points) and tallying 121 penalty minutes.
Germain was named the Royals Defensive player of the year in each of his two seasons and was the recipient of the Royals Community Service Award in 2006-07. He was also named the HOK Sport ECHL Plus Performer of the Month for December, 2006 after completing the month with a +12 rating in 13 games and at that time led the Royals with a +16 rating on the season. During his time as a Royal, Germain was called up for a one-game stint with the Hersey Bears of the AHL where he tallied two penalty minutes in his stay.
In 2003-04, he skated in 26 games for Grant MacEwen College tallying eight points (1g, 7a) before attending the University of Waterloo in 2004-05 where he was a member of the reviving men's hockey program led by then-Head Coach Karl Taylor. As a Warrior, Germain played in 24 games netting 13 points (1g, 12a) and 12 penalty minutes. That same season, he was nominated as the Sportsmanlike Player of the Year for the West Section of the Ontario University Athletic Conference.
"Chad and Shawn are both solid defensemen," Reign Head Coach Karl Taylor said. "They bring workmanlike attitudes and a good work ethic to the team. We are happy to have them join the Reign this season."
TRANSACTIONS
In other notes, the Reign announced that they have released Defensemen Brian Cooke and Travis Leighton along with Forwards Alex Redmond and C.J. Tozzo from the training camp roster.
