Stockton Ports News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - In a ballpark where the Stockton Ports have had a hard time finding a win this season, the Boys of Banner Island earned their most lopsided victory of the year. Stockton got home runs from Daniel Robertson and Billy McKinney and seven scoreless innings from Jake Sanchez (1-0) on their way to a 10-0 win over the Bakersfield Blaze.

Blaze starter Daniel Wright (4-1) stumbled out of the gate as he allowed a leadoff single to Boog Powell and then a two-run homer to Robertson in the top of the first that put the Ports in front 2-0. Wright, however, would go on to retire 11 batters in a row after surrendering the home run to Robertson. Ryon Healy broke up the stretch of 11 in a row set down with a two-out single in the fourth. Bruce Maxwell then drew a walk and McKinney delivered an RBI single to right to give the Ports a 3-0 cushion.

Wright went on to retire seven of the final eight batters he faced, including four straight strikeouts to end his outing as he suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out a season-high nine.

Meanwhile, Sanchez was in the midst of a tremendous outing for Stockton. After allowing a pair of singles in the first inning, Sanchez allowed just a two-out double in the third an a leadoff single in the fourth, which was quickly erased on an ensuing double-play that began a stretch of 11 in a row retired to complete his outing.

Sanchez picked up his first victory with Stockton, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing four hits and not issuing a walk and striking out nine.

Ryan Kemp took over for Bakersfield in the seventh inning and gave up a leadoff home run to McKinney, his 10th of the season, to make it a 4-0 lead. After back-to-back singles and an error, Powell delivered a two-run double to left to score Wade Kirkland and Aaron Shipman to make it a 6-0 lead. Powell would advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a dropped fly ball in right by Jeff Gelalich to make it a 7-0 advantage. Kemp pitched just one third of an inning and allowed four runs on five hits.

James Allen, who recorded the final two outs of the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth, hit Robertson to open the ninth and then gave up four straight singles, the last two to Healy and Maxwell to drive in a pair of runs and make it 9-0. Stockton added a 10th run when McKinney hit into a double-play to score Renato Nunez. Allen allowed three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings worked.

Omar Duran pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Ports to preserve the shutout victory.

Stockton will try and earn a series split when they play the series finale with Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Tim Atherton (6-2, 5.04 ERA) makes the start for the Ports, opposed by Blaze right-hander Drew Cisco (4-2, 5.82 ERA). First pitch is set for 12 p.m. PDT.
