The Stockton Ports scored two runs on the first two minutes of the game, and though the visitors continued to add, those tallies out of the gate would be enough as the Bakersfield Blaze offense was held in check in a 10-0 loss on a crowded Saturday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.
Daniel Wright (L, 4-1) got the start and threw the ball exceptionally well. But before Daniel could properly settle in, Stockton took a lead that they would never relinquish. A leadoff single was followed immediately by a two-run homer into the catwalk in right, and the Blaze found themselves behind 2-0 before the fans could don their souvenir Blaze hats.
From there, both starters moved into a duel. Wright set down 11 Ports in a row into the 4th, when Stockton added a two-out run to take a 3-0 lead.
Jake Sanchez (W, 1-0), on the Stockton side, allowed two singles in the 1st, but was nearly untouched the rest of the way. Sanchez ended up going 7.0 innings for a cruising win, scattering a total of just four Blaze hits, striking out 9 without a walk.
In the late frames, the Ports picked on what had been a rolling Blaze pen. Ryan Kemp was greeted rudely in the 7th, as Stockton added four runs for a 7-0 edge, and after James Allen went 1.2 scoreless to begin his evening, the former starter ran out of gas in the 9th, and Stockton added a few more on a hit batsman and four singles for the double digit final edge.
Omar Duran worked the final two innings for Stockton in the blowout.
The Blaze will look to put this one-sided loss behind them quickly, as the homestand and the series come to a close in a high noon start on Sunday. Tim Atherton and Drew Cisco will do battle once again, facing teams with which they are quite familiar.
