Giants Take Series from Rawhide with 2-1 Victory

SAN JOSE - Joe Kurrasch allowed just one run over seven innings as the San Jose Giants edged the Visalia Rawhide by a 2-1 score on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Chuckie Jones hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth before Kurrasch and relievers Bryce Bandilla and Tyler Mizenko shut down the Rawhide over the final three frames to secure the victory. With the win, San Jose takes three out of four games in the series.

Kurrasch (6-2) allowed only four hits with two walks and three strikeouts during his 90-pitch performance to pick-up his team-leading sixth victory of the season. Bandilla (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then worked a scoreless top of the eighth before Mizenko (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the ninth for his sixth save this year.

Alberto Robles (2-for-3, 2B) had two hits, including a key double in the bottom of the sixth, to lead the Giants offensively.

Visalia took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a single run against Kurrasch. Alex Glenn began the frame by drawing a walk before stealing second. Then with one out, Brandon Jacobs ripped a double down the left field line to bring home Glenn.

San Jose though immediately answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second. Blake Miller led off with a single before Ben Turner's one-out single to right put runners on the corners. Elliott Blair followed with a sacrifice fly to right plating Miller with the tying run.

After Kurrasch induced a double play to end the top of the third, the San Jose lefty worked three straight 1-2-3 innings. Meanwhile, Rawhide starter Brandon Sinnery set down 11 consecutive Giants batters through the end the fifth.

With the score still tied, Robles began the bottom of the sixth with a double into the right center field gap - San Jose's first baserunner since Turner's single in the second inning. Robles then moved to third on Jesus Galindo's sacrifice bunt and scored when the next batter, Jones, hit a sacrifice fly to deep center.

Kurrasch had retired 10 hitters in a row until Glenn led off the seventh with a single. Steve McQuail was up next and he doubled into deep right center advancing Glenn, the potential tying run, to third. Kurrasch though needed only five pitches to work through the next three hitters and keep the Giants ahead. Jacobs flied out to shallow right for the first out of the inning. Fidel Pena then hit a grounder to third as Mitch Delfino easily threw out Glenn, who was attempting to score, at the plate for the second out. Ronnie Freeman then flied out to shallow right on the first pitch of his at-bat to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Bandilla surrendered a leadoff infield single to Kevin Medrano, but quickly retired the next three hitters on a pop out to second, a strikeout and a lineout to third.

Then in the ninth, Glenn led off with a single against Mizenko to again put the tying run on the base. However, Mizenko struck out McQuail before Jacobs grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out. Pinch-hitter Rudy Flores was up next, but he struck out on three pitches to end the game.

The three San Jose pitchers combined to allow just six hits in the contest.

Sinnery (7-6) threw his league-leading second complete game of the season, but suffered the loss. The right-hander worked eight innings with two runs (both earned) and four hits allowed. Sinnery walked one, struck out two and threw 116 pitches.

Notes: San Jose finished their homestand with a 4-3 record, winning the last three games ... Kurrasch lowered his ERA to 1.76 ... Jones has eight RBI's over his last three games ... The Rawhide out-hit the Giants 6-4 on Sunday ... The final game time was two hours and 16 minutes - San Jose's quickest game of the season ... The Giants finish June with a 13-11 record - their first winning month this year ... Relief pitcher Jorge Bucardo was added to the San Jose roster from Fresno (AAA) before the game on Sunday.

On Deck: After an off day on Monday, the Giants travel to Modesto on Tuesday to begin a three-game series against the Nuts. First pitch at John Thurman Field is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Matt Lujan (1-0, 5.40 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Modesto is expected to counter with Jayson Aquino (2-4, 6.68 ERA).
