Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports are pleased to announce the 2010 Opening Day roster and to welcome this year's squad to Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports players broke Oakland A's minor league camp on Sunday, and are gearing up to face the Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A, Oakland) in a two-game exhibition series on April 6 and April 7 before the season opener on April 8 at Visalia.
Leading the 2010 team will be new manager Steve Scarsone, who managed the Kane County Cougars in 2009, leading them to a 76-64 record and a playoff appearance. This will be his second season as a manager in the A's organization. He will be joined by pitching coach Don Schulze and hitting coach Tim Garland.
There are currently 25 players on the Opening Day roster. Ten players from the 2009 squad, including Anthony Capra, Scott Hodsdon, Justin Murray, Daniel Sattler, Lance Sewell, Daniel Thomas, Grant Green, Kala Ka'aihue, Shane Keough and Jermaine Mitchell, will return for the 2010 season.
Capra was the strikeout king for the A's farm system in 2009, totaling 170 strikeouts. Capra fanned 67 batters in 52.0 innings for the Ports last season. Hodsdon led the team with 127.2 innings last season, making 21 starts and six appearances in relief for Stockton. He also notched 103 strikeouts for the Ports last season. Murray, Sattler, Sewell and Thomas were solid arms in the Ports bullpen in 2009, and look to perform well again in relief this season.
Green, the A's First Round draft pick in 2009, made his professional debut with the Ports on September 2. In five games with the club, he batted .316 with a double and three RBI. He'll look to continue to swing a hot bat with Stockton in 2010. Ka'aihue played in 18 games for the Ports, after being signed by the A's organization in August, collecting a double, triple, four home runs and 12 RBI in that span. He'll look to also perform well at the plate this summer. Keough and Mitchell will return to roam the outfield again in 2010. Mitchell led the team in triples with six, and Keough ranked among team leaders in hits with 105.
Among the new players heading to Stockton are several 2009 Midwest League All-Stars. RHP Shawn Haviland and RHP Kenny Smalley were both named to the 2009 Midwest League mid-season All-Star team. Haviland, a Harvard graduate, ranked tenth among all A's minor leaguers in ERA (4.71), fourth in strikeouts (121) and second in innings pitched (153.0) last season. Smalley led all A's minor leaguers in ERA (2.73), ranked fifth in strikeouts (119), tied for seventh in wins (9) and ranked ninth in innings pitched (131.2) in 2009.
Among other new pitchers are Trey Barham, a reliever who held opposing batters to a .177 average last year, and Scott Deal, who led the Kane County Cougars in appearances last season. Jose Pina and Anivoris Ramirez, as well as Murphy Smith will also round out the pitching staff in 2010.
Petey Paramore, the A's 3rd round draft pick from 2008, along with Dusty Napoleon and Ryan Ortiz will serve as catchers this season. Paramore was tied for eighth among A's minor leaguers in walks in 2009 with 55. The infield will be populated by newcomers Jason Christian, Tyler Ladendorf and 2009 draft picks Stephen Parker and Michael Spina. Christian, who was a 2009 Midwest League All-Star, ranked fourth in the A's farm system in stolen bases (28) in 2009. Ladendorf was acquired from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Orlando Cabrera and cash on July 31, 2009. He was the Twins second round draft pick in 2008. Jeremy Barfield, son of former major leaguer Jesse Barfield and younger brother of Josh Barfield, will also be an outfielder for Stockton this season.
