Danbury Trashers News Release
Scott Stirling turned in another outstanding performance as he earned the Number One Star for the 3rd straight game as he turned aside 34 shots in the Trashers' 3-0 win over Elmira on Wednesday night at First Arena.
Following a scoreless first period that saw a combined 31 shots on goal, the Trashers finally scored on the power play at the 12:43 mark of the 2nd when Blake Bellefeuille tipped in a drive by Brent Gretzky to give Danbury a 1-0 lead. Bruce Richarson earned the other assist on the goal.
After 40 minutes of action, the teams combined for 59 shots on net with only the lone tally to show for it. The Trashers peppered Greg Hewitt 20 times in the 2nd frame, and Hewitt's netminding kept the Jackals in the game for most of the contest.
Danbury started off quickly in the 3rd period as Mathieu Wathier's blasted a drive past Hewitt at the 2:14 mark from Brian Herbert to give Danbury a 2-0 lead. Brad Wingfield then scored an empty net goal for his 4th of the season with 50 seconds remaining as Elmira had the extra attacker on the ice.
Greg Hewitt faced 50 of the Trashers' franchise record 51 shots on the night and stopped 48 of them in a losing cause. The win is Danbury's second straight and it earned them a piece of 1st place with 21 points (10-6-1) following Adirondack's win over Richmond as the Frostbite also have 21 (9-5-3) on the year.
Danbury returns to action on Friday night at 7:30 against Richmond from the Danbury Ice Arena. Tickets are available at DanburyTrashers.com, by calling 866-565-PUCK or in person at the arena.
