Generals dismantle the Mechanics

FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals of the United Hockey League continue their surge to challenge for the top spot in the Central Division with a gritty 5-1 victory over the Motor City Mechanics,Thursday night at Perani Arena.

Flint opened the scoring on a great give-and-go between Bobby Reynolds and Leo Thomas that resulted in the latter getting a partial breakaway into the Motor City zone, with a great deke on Mechanics' goaltender Rod Branch, sliding the shot low to the glove side for a short-handed goal and the 1-0 Flint lead. The Mechanics tied it with only seven second left in the first period on a goal from defenseman Kyle Kos (1) for a 1-1 tie after the first period.

Flint took the lead for good on a power play goal late in the second period by defenseman Mike Tobin (1) at 18:31 for the 2-1 lead. Flint exploded for three goals in the third period and defenseman Andrei Lupandin (1) scored at 4:26 for the 3-1 lead. Thomas snapped a wrist shot top shelf stick side past Branch for the 4-1 lead at 10:14. Reynolds (6) wrapped up the scoring on a short-handed goal at 17:08 for the 5-1 victory.

Goaltender Marco Emond stopped 26 of 27 shots for his sixth victory of the season. The Generals (9-5-2, 20 pts.) still hold second place in the Central Division one point behind first place Muskegon. The Motor City Mechanics (2-14-1, 5 pts.) are in fifth place in the Central Division, four points behind fourth place Port Huron.

The Generals hit the road for the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend on Friday, November 26, 2004 at Elmira at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, November 27, 2004 at Danbury at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 28, 2004 at Danbury at 5:30 p.m. (All games on WFNT-AM 1470, Pre-Game Show Airs 20 minutes before face-off.)
