Sting's Record-Breaking Season Comes to a Close

This was a year to remember. In a campaign that saw the Sarnia Sting set franchise records for regular season wins and points, this was one heck of a team.

The Sting hosted the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday evening. It was game six of our best-of-seven Western conference semi-final.

In front of a packed house at Progressive Auto Sales Arena, the Sting put forward everything they could in a must-win game. But some things are not meant to be, and tonight, the Rangers were ready to advance. Kitchener took the game by a final score of 6-2, and won the series with four victories in six games.

Sting forward Anthony Salinitri returned to the lineup this evening after missing nine games with injury. It was Salinitri who started things off. Salinitri scored a backhand beauty with five minutes left in the first period. Taking a setup pass from Jonathan Ang, Salinitri's second of the postseason gave the Sting a 1-0 lead.

Rangers forwards Adam Mascherin and Greg Meireles each replied with quick goals of their own. After one period, the Blueshirts held a 2-1 lead.

In the second, Mascherin potted another one, and the Rangers maintained a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame.

Moving into the third period, it was all or nothing for the Sting. Pushing hard on the offensive end is a give-and-take with the defensive side; for Sarnia, they just ran out of time.

Kitchener forward Givani Smith scored a pair in the third. Logan Brown recorded the other tally.

Sting captain Jordan Kyrou provided some hope with his third goal of the playoffs, but tonight just wasn't our night. Tonight's final score was 6-2 for the Rangers.

Sarnia goaltender Justin Fazio turned aside twenty-three shots in between the pipes. This evening's official box score can be viewed here.
