South Carolina Stingrays News Release
LAST WEEK'S RESULTS:
January 29: South Carolina at Norfolk, 8-2 Loss
David Pacan improved his goal scoring streak to five games and Paul Rodrigues scored as well, but four goals in the first period, including two from Scott Allen, propelled the Norfolk Admirals to a 8-2 victory over the visiting South Carolina Stingrays Friday Night at the Norfolk Scope.
January 30: South Carolina at Norfolk, 6-1 Win
Five points from new addition Brandon Magee, and three power play goals, helped the South Carolina Stingrays earn a 6-1 victory over the Norfolk Admirals at the Norfolk Scope Saturday night. The Stingrays got 37 saves from goalie Mark Dekanich in the victory.
MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT
APECS Aerospace and the South Carolina Stingrays are teaming up for our annual Military Appreciation Night this Saturday, February 6 at 7:05 p.m versus Florida. The Stingrays will be wearing special military themed jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game to benefit America's Mighty Warriors. APECS wants to thank the brave men and women of the military along with Gold Star Families by offering tickets to those who have served and are currently serving. These complimentary tickets are avaliable to request by visiting StingraysHockey.com/military and filling out the required form. The evening will also feature an appearance from Debbie Lee of America's Mighty Warriors.
DEVIN RETURNS
Last week, Joe Devin was returned to the Stingrays after being released from a professional try-out with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL). Devin, 28, will provide an offensive boost to South Carolina. During his time with Lake Erie, Devin skated in 16 games, scoring seven points (five goals, two assists) with a +3 rating. Devin made his impact with the Stingrays right away this past weekend, notching his ninth goal of the season in the Stingrays 6-1 win on Saturday.
THRUSHING BACK
Forward Casey Thrush joins the Stingrays after being claimed off waivers from the Allen Americans. He will wear #23. Thrush, 23, is in his rookie season. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Olney, Md. native registered three points (one goal, two assists) in 13 contests with the Allen Americans this season. Prior to turning pro, Thrush played four seasons of collegiate hockey at the University of New Hampshire.
FORMER GOALIE COPLEY CALLED UP TO BLUES
Former South Carolina goaltender Pheonix Copley was called-up by the National Hockey League's (NHL) St. Louis Blues on Sunday. Copley skated with the Stingrays during the 2013-14 season, appearing in three regular season games with South Carolina following his NCAA season at Michigan Tech. Copley went 2-1-0 with a 3.26 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage. Orginally a Washington product, Copley was acquired by the Blues via a trade with the Capitals this past July. He has appeared in 25 games for the Chicago Wolves, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Blues, posting an 11-11-1 record this season.
BRAMPTON BREAKDOWN
This Friday, the Stingrays battle the Brampton Beast from South Brampton, Ontario for the first time in club history. The Beast have a record of 14-19-6-3 with 37 points. They currently hold the fourth spot in the North Division and 14th spot in the Eastern Conference, and 26th overall in league standings. The Beast will face off against the Fort Wayne Komets on home ice at Powerade Centre on February 2 before heading out on the road to take on the Stingrays.
NHL AFFILIATE UPDATE:
Washington Capitals (35-8-4, 1st Metropolitan Division, 1st Eastern Conference)
Notes: This past weekend, former Stingrays goalie Braden Holtby, forwards Evgeny Kuznetsov and Niklas Backstrom, and coach Barry Trotz took part in the 2016 NHL All-Star Game in Nashville, Tennessee. This was the first All-Star appearance for Holtby, who played for the Stingrays in 2009-10.
AHL AFFILIATE UPDATE:
Hershey Bears (21-13-2-5, 3rd Atlantic Division, 5th Eastern Conference)
Notes: On Saturday, the Bears posted a 5-1 win against the Syracuse Crunch to split the season series. Forward Riley Barber had a hat trick and an assist while Scott Gomez extended his point streak to five games.
