South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Greenville, SC Davis Parley made 30 saves for the South Carolina Stingrays as the visiting Rays upended the Greenville Grrrowl 2-1 in front of 3,368 at the Bilo Center. Parley worked a shut out late into the hockey game and earned his second win with the Rays.
The win was the fourth straight for South Carolina against the Grrrowl snapping a three game winning streak for Greenville. Trevor Johnson's first period short handed goal proved to be the game winner as the Rays improved to 12-12-7 and earned a share of fourth place with Greenville (15-10-1)
The Stingrays grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Craig Olynick and Trevor Johnson. Olynick scored his third goal in four games when Evan Schwabe found the defenseman in front of Grrrowl netminder Cam Ellsworth at 5:08 of the first period on a two on one. Olynick tipped the puck in to the upper right corner for his fifth goal of the season. Johnson's goal came short handed, after Matt Reid stripped the Greenville defense of the puck, his cross ice pass found the Stingrays captain, who beat Ellsworth with a wrist shot for his third goal of the season. It was the sixth short handed goal of the season for the Stingrays.
The Rays nursed the 2-0 lead until the 17:15 mark of the third period when Brock Radunske tipped a Duncan Dalmao shot past Parley to cut the lead to one. Parley and the Rays managed to hold for the victory despite a late Greenville two on one break.
"Davis was solid for us all night," commented Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "He didn't get down after that late goal and managed a few big saves in the last couple of minutes.
Notes: The Stingrays welcomed back defenseman Derek Engelland in time for Sunday's game. The Rays could have Robin Gomez and All Star Jeff Legue back as soon as Tuesday. Goaltender Maxime Daigneault was sent back to the Stingrays from the Washington Capitals on Sunday night after a 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers.
The Stingrays will return home to begin a two game home stand on Tuesday night against the Charlotte Checkers at 7:05. The Rays will welcome the Greenville Grrrowl to the Coliseum on Friday night before traveling to Augusta on Saturday, January 7th.
