Stingrays Ink Tommy Goebel for 2010-11 Season

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Cail MacLean announced today that the team has signed forward Tommy Goebel. In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Goebel, 25, appeared in 40 games last season with Bietigheim-Bissingen SC of the 2.Bundesliga in Germany scoring nine goals and 23 assists for 32 points. Before venturing overseas, the Parma, OH native suited up in 35 games with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL registering 42 points (14g, 28a) and skated in 25 contests with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League tallying 12 points (4g, 8a).

"Tommy's skill level will make him a great addition to our forward lineup," said MacLean. "He has proven himself at this level and he is motivated to move up the professional ladder. We are excited to add a player with Tommy's combination of skill, speed and determination."

Prior to turning pro, the 5-foot-7, 166-pound forward spent four years with the Ohio State University Buckeyes and Michigan State University Spartans. Goebel competed for the Spartans in his first two NCAA seasons scoring 21 goals and 32 assists for 53 points in 76 games. In 2004, Goebel ranked third on the team in points, fifth in the nation in points per game among rookies (.91) and received a CCHA All-Rookie Team honorable mention selection. After transferring to the Buckeyes following the completion of his sophomore campaign, Goebel dressed in 71 games acquiring 62 points (33g, 29a).

The Stingrays drop the puck on their 18th season of hockey in the Low Country on Friday, October 22 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:35 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Opening Weekend is set for Friday, November 5, Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7 against the Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at North Charleston Coliseum.
