South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays scored four first-period goals as they skated to a 5-4 victory over the Wheeling Nailers in front of 6,812 fans at North Charleston Coliseum Friday night. Stingrays Head Coach Cail MacLean recorded his first professional win as a head coach and the Stingrays raised their 2008-2009 Kelly Cup Championship banner.

Stingrays forward Rob Ricci started the scoring 8:54 into the first period with a low shot beating Nailers goaltender Jordan Parise. Ricci connected on his third shot attempt after the first two bounced over the blade of his stick. Matt Scherer earned the assist on the goal. Michael Dubuc continued the scoring four minutes later with a breakaway goal thanks to a broken Nailler stick and quick pass from Keith Johnson at 12:54. The Nailers cut the Stingrays lead in half at 14:39 as Andrew Lord capitalized on a misplay from Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford slipping a slow rolling shot between his legs. Dan Henningson picked up the lone assist.

Stingrays forward Rob Ricci quickly changed back the momentum netting his second goal of the night off a bounce from behind the net. Jake Hauswirth's initial shot sailed wide of the net missing the short-side goal post, but quickly bounced out to Ricci waiting on the goal line. Dylan Yeo generated the second assist. Keith Johnson added a power play tally at 18:04 to send the Stingrays to the locker room with a three-goal lead. Zach Tarkir and brother Gregg Johnson added the assists.

The Nailers entered the second period refocused and proved it on the scoreboard. Joey Haddad knocked home a lose puck at 10:35 to once more cut a Stingrays lead in half. Nailer forward Blair Yaworski assisted on the play. Stingrays forward Nikita Kashirsky answered back a little over three minutes later with a 3-on-1 rush burying a well place shot high blocker-side on Parise. Kashirsky's unassisted marker eventually proved to be the game-winning goal. TJ Fox followed with a goal of his own to keep the Nailers within striking distance at 15:37. Setting up Fox was Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Mitch Ganzak.

The third period became a defensive battle between the two clubs, but it was the Nailers that broke through at 15:42 when defenseman Thomas Beauregard capitalized on quick passing and pulling the Nailers within one. TJ Fox and Casey Pierro-Zabotel created the play for Beauregard.

Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford proved to be the winner stopping 24 of 28 Wheeling shots while suffering the loss was Jordan Parise stopping 26 pucks on 31 South Carolina shots.
