South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Johnstown, PA - The South Carolina Stingrays scored a game tying goal with less than a minute to play in the third period by Andrew Andricopoulos, but fell in overtime by a final of 4-3 to the Johnstown Chiefs.
The Stingrays began their only regular season Northern trip when they faced off against the Johnstown Chiefs for an early morning affair. Since the game's intention was to bring out school children on field trips, they dropped the puck at 10:30 AM, the only time this season the Stingrays will play before noon.
The Rays fell early, and with just over 5 minutes to play in the first period, they found themselves trailing by two goals. But just 27 seconds later, Stephen Werner scored his first goal of the season to cut the lead in half. Werner's goal, at 14:51 was assisted by Marty Guerin. With less than a minute to go in the period the Rays struck again to tie up the score at two. Patrick McNeill got his first goal of the year at 19:05 of the first period with the lone assist going to Paul McIlveen.
The second period saw the Chiefs retake the lead, 3-2, when defenseman Jason Spence scored his first goal of the season.
The Stingrays tried to tie things up in the third period, but it did not appear that they would be able to get anything passed Chief's goaltender Ryan Nie. With just over a minute to play, they Rays pulled their goalie, Davis Parley, in favor of the extra attacker. The move paid off as newcomer Andricopoulos jumped on a loose puck and riffled it passed Nie with only 35 seconds to go in the game.
In overtime, South Carolina only got one shot off on Nie, and Robbie Drummond pushed across the game winning goal at 4:22 of the extra period.
This was the first time the Stingrays had gone to overtime this season. The winning goaltender was Nie who finished with 32 saves on 35 shots. The losing goaltender was Parley who finished with 34 saves on 38 shots. The Rays went 0-5 on the power play and killed 10 of 11 penalty kills.
South Carolina is back in action on Friday night when they take on the Wheeling Nailers in Wheeling, WV. Game time will be 7:35 with the Benito's pre-game show beginning at 7:20. The game can be heard on AM-1340 WQSC.
