Stockton Thunder News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Rookie goaltender Glenn Fisher stopped 38 shots for his first career shutout, aided by two power-play goals from Ryan O'Marra as the Stockton Thunder (1-3-0, 2 points) cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Phoenix RoadRunners at U.S. Airways Center on Wednesday night.
Fisher recorded the sixth shutout in the Thunder's all-time history.
The Thunder raced out to a 2-0 lead through one period, scoring their fifth power-play goal of the young season on Jesse Bennefield's third goal of the year at the 3:49 mark for a 1-0 Thunder lead. Bennefield took Andy Contois' right corner centering pass and one-timed it past the blocker of Phoenix goaltender Cody Rudkowsky.
Contois added his second point of the game with 3:39 left in the period by scoring the Thunder's first shorthanded goal of the season, pouncing on a loose puck at the neutral zone and beating Rudkowsky to the blocker side to hike Stockton's lead to 2-0.
Fisher making just his second pro start, stopped all 15 Phoenix shots in the first period, denying four full power-play bids.
Both teams battled through a scoreless second period, with Fisher taking the spotlight on a 14-save performance in the period including a point-blank stop on Chris Stevens' one-timed bid from the deep slot. Rudkowsky responded with a dazzling glove save in mid-air on an Adam Huxley rebound bid.
O'Marra posted the final two goals of the game, beginning on a one-timer at the 3:58 mark of the third period and putting the game out-of-reach on a deflected shot by Brian Lee at the 11:29 mark of the third.
The Thunder returns home to face the Alaska Aces on Saturday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m. PT in the home opener at Stockton Arena. The game can be heard live on radio at 1420 KSTN and on the internet (video and audio available) at www.stocktonthunder.com, courtesy of B2 Networks.
