South Carolina Stingrays News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today that the team has signed defenseman Steve Spencer for the upcoming season. Spencer becomes the first player signed by the Stingrays for the 2004-05 campaign. Spencer will enter his second season as a professional when the puck drops in October.

Spencer, a native of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, played in just 35 games last season for the Stingrays due to a hand injury suffered in December. Spencer had five assists and 119 penalty minutes as a rookie.

"No defenseman in this league works harder than Steve Spencer," commented Fitzsimmons. "Steve is the kind of player that every coach wants in his lineup. Signing him was a huge priority for us this off season."

Spencer was selected in the ninth round of the 2002 National Hockey League entry draft by the Nashville Predators. A 22 year old, Spencer stands 6'3" and weighs 230 lbs.

"Steve plays every game like it is his last," added Fitzsimmons. "He definitely keeps opposing players honest with his physical play and leads by example every night."

The Stingrays will drop the puck on the upcoming season on October 22nd in Columbia. The Rays home opener is scheduled for October 23rd against the Charlotte Checkers. Season ticket packages are available starting at just $55.50.
