South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today that Ryan Warsofsky joins the team as the Manger of Hockey Operations and Assistant Coach and James Sorrentino returns as Head Scout.
Warsofsky enters his first professional campaign behind the bench after serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Curry College, last season, helping the Colonels to a 7-3-4-0 record. Before joining the coaching ranks, the North Marshfield, Massachusetts, native skated one season of pro hockey split between the Turnhout White Caps in the Netherlands and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League in 2010-11 combining for 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) in 23 games.
"I am excited to see the players fully develop and help them work on their game," said Warsofsky. "I look forward to learning from Spencer throughout the season and from the players themselves."
"Ryan is a tremendous addition to the Hockey Operations staff," added Carbery. "He has come to us highly recommended through various references with many seasons of professional hockey experience. I think he is going to do a great job integrating into our organization."
A former defenseman, Warsofsky divided four seasons of college hockey between Sacred Heart University and Curry College recording 47 points (13 goals, 34 assists) in 71 total contests. Warsofsky's younger brother, David, is currently in his third full season patrolling the blueline with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League and was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round (95th overall) of the 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Sorrentino begins his sixth season as Head Scout with the Stingrays. The Boston, Massachusetts, native began his career as manager and player of the Boston Braves in 1989 before starting J.S. Scouting Service in 2000. As president of J.S. Scouting Service, Sorrentino specializes in the evaluation of pro and amateur players throughout North America. Prior to joining the Stingrays, he worked with the Florida Panthers of the NHL and Sunrise Sports Entertainment.
"Jimmy has been a tremendous asset to our organization and the coaching staff," Carbery said. "His dedication to the Stingrays has continued and we are thrilled to have him back this season."
The Stingrays kick off their 21st season of hockey in the Lowcountry on Saturday, October 19 against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. in Reading, Pennsylvania and celebrate Opening Night, Stingrays Alumni Game, Zooperstars! and 2013-14 schedule giveaway presented by Savage Law Firm at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, October 26 against their in-state rivals, the Greenville Road Warriors, at 7:05 p.m.
