Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER â Four consecutive Arizona goals in a one minute, 24 second span of the fourth quarter lifted the visiting Sting to a 16-15 victory over the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday night at Pepsi Center.
Lindsay Plunkett bookended the four-goal run that rallied the Sting from a 14-12 deficit with less than five minutes remaining in the game. After goals 13 seconds apart by Plunkett and Bruce Codd, Dan Dawson scored a power-play goal with 3:39 left to put Arizona up by one. Plunkett's power-play marker less than a minute later served as the game-winner.
Del Halladay's second goal pulled the Mammoth within one before he misfired on a potential game-tying shot in the waning moments. Colorado retained possession with 3.7 seconds on the scoreboard but Gary Gait's shot before the buzzer whistled wide.
The crowd of 17,289 witnessed just the fourth Mammoth loss at Pepsi Center in 18 regular-season matches.
Gavin Prout, who led the Mammoth with five goals and seven points, scored two goals to open the fourth quarter, staking Colorado to a 13-11 lead. After Arizona's Daren Halls scored to make it 13-12, Gait scored the last of his three goals with 5:50 left to put the Mammoth up by two before Arizona took over.
Dan Stroup added two goals for Colorado and Josh Sims and Brian Reese each scored once. Defender Pat Coyle scored his first goal in a Mammoth uniform to round out the team's scoring.
Dawson led Arizona with five goals and seven points, while Cory Bomberry and Gewas Schindler each tallied six points. Pat Maddalena added five points on one goal and four assists.
Gee Nash took the loss in goal for the Mammoth, making 38 saves. Arizona's Mike Miron earned the win with 44 saves.
The first half was one of streaks. After Arizona initiated the scoring Colorado rallied with four straight goals, the last of which made possible by a great play from Gait. After having his shot blocked Gait retrieved the ball off the boards and flicked a blind, behind-the-back pass to Prout in the high slot. Prout took one step toward the cage and buried a 20-foot shot to put the Mammoth up 4-1.
But just when it seemed the Mammoth would run Arizona out of the building Dawson broke the tide, and started a run for Arizona that didn't subside until the Sting was up 6-4. The Mammoth answered with three goals in a span of 1:45 to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
