Anaheim Storm News Release
Anaheim, CA (January 8, 2005) - The storm inside the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim proved to be fierce as the Anaheim Storm (1-0) captured a 13-10 win over the Philadelphia Wings (1-1).
The team, led by new General Manager and Head Coach Derek Keenan, includes eight returning and 15 new players. Two new assistant coaches, Jeff McComb and Jeremy Tallevi, add to the depth and talent of the new Anaheim Storm.
"When we took this program over, we stressed being a team and family more than anything," said Keenan. "What we saw tonight was a tremendous team effort. Every player, from the goalie to the last runner, played hard for sixty minutes."
The team hosted their season opener in front of one the largest crowds yet. The 5,732 lacrosse fans showed that the popularity of lacrosse is continuing to grow in Southern California.
Newcomer forward Ryan Powell (2G, 2A) made a statement as he scored the first goal of the game 2:20 into the first quarter. Powell went on to score another goal in the third quarter, followed by two assists, including one to his brother Casey Powell (1G, 1A).
The Storm, who were down 6-2 at the beginning of the second quarter, rallied in the third quarter by scoring five goals, shutting out the Wings. The rally continued in the fourth quarter with the Storm outscored the Wings 5-3.
Storm players contributing to the win included: Shawn Cable (3G,1A), Scott Stewart (2G,3A), and goalie Matt Roik (1G,1A) who secured the win, scoring the final goal of the game on an empty net.
The Storm face the Rochester Knighthawks (0-1) in their second game of the season on January 22nd at the Arrowhead Pond.
