Storm Blow Past Wings With 13-10 Win

ANAHEIM, CA - The Philadelphia Wings were defeated by the Anaheim Storm by a score of 13-10 in their second game of the regular season at the Arrowhead Pond. The Wings next game is their home opener on Saturday, January 22 against the Toronto Rock at the Wachovia Center at 8:00 p.m.

"In the second half of the game, we got away from our game plan and everything that we've worked on," said Wings' General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson. "We'll work hard in the next two weeks and be ready to get back on track for our home opener on January 22 ."

Anaheim started the scoring just 2:20 into the game when Ryan Powell got his first goal of the night. The Wings grabbed the lead with goals by Keith Cromwell and Bryan Bendig. But, Anaheim tied the game at two when Scott Stewart scored at 9:03. The Wings finished the quarter with a three-goal tear, with scoring by Tom Marechek, rookie Andrew Burkholder (his first NLL goal), and Jeff Ratcliffe. At the end of the first quarter, the Wings held a 5-2 lead.

Philadelphia scored first in the second quarter when Marechek scored his second of the night at 3:24. Anaheim then scored two straight, first with a power play goal by Richard Morgan and with a goal by Chad Wittman at 13:28. The Wings had the final score of the half when Marc Morley scored short-handed with :02 second to go in the second quarter. At the end of two periods of play, the Wings held a 7-4 lead. Wings goaltender Nick Schroeder made 18 saves in the first half.

The Storm opened the second half strong with three consecutive goals (Shawn Cable, Mitchell, R. Powell) to tie the game at seven. The Storm got the go-ahead goal with just seconds left in the third quarter when Casey Powell scored on a power play goal. At the end of the third quarter, the Storm held an 8-7 lead.

Anaheim and Philadelphia traded a pair of goals (Cable-ANH, Ryan Ward-PHL) to start the fourth quarter. Anaheim then scored three straight (Scott Stewart, Cable, BJ Potter) to increase their lead to four. The Wings scored two more (Ward, Morley), but Anaheim got the last goal of the game (Matt Dwane) to keep the lead and win the game 13-10. Wings' goaltender Nick Schroeder finished the game with 31 saves while Matt Roik made 29 saves for the Storm.

Leading the Wings in scoring were Byan Bendig (2G, 1A) and Tom Marechek (1G, 2A) with three points each, Ryan Ward (2G) and Keith Cromwell (1G, 1A) with two points, and Andrew Burkholder, Dan Finck, Marc Morley and Jeff Ratcliffe all with one goal each.
