Stealth Drop Home Opener 14-10 To Calgary

SAN JOSE - The Calgary Roughnecks (1-1) earned a split of their home-and-home series against the San Jose Stealth (1-1) with a 14-10 win in San Jose's home opener tonight before 7,028 at HP Pavilion at San Jose.

Calgary opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match when Chris Gill's shot got past goaltender Anthony Cosmo. Less than two minutes later, Calgary struck again with the first of five goals by Tracy Kelusky to give the Roughnecks a 2-0 lead.

Almost four minutes later, Stealth defenseman Jim Moss cut the lead in half with a goal just as the power play expired with assists from Gary Rosyski and Derek Malawsky. Kevin Fines tied the match just over a minute later with a goal as he was being hit from behind.

Calgary scored early in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead, but Ryan Boyle scored on a give-and-go from Rosyski to put San Jose down by one, 4-3. The Stealth tied the game a little over a minute later when Curt Malawsky scored on a rebound. Calgary and San Jose exchanged goals later in the quarter, but the Roughnecks scored on a two-man advantage to take a 6-5 lead at halftime.

The Stealth tied the score 35 seconds into the third quarter on Boyle's second goal of the game. After Kelusky scored his third goal, San Jose responded with three goals. The first came from Rosyski on a no-look pass from Darryl Gibson and the second was on a power play by Fines, which gave the Stealth their first lead of the game at 8-7. Cam Woods put San Jose up 9-7 on a shorthanded goal. But the Roughnecks scored three straight goals by Kaleb Toth, Kelusky and ex-Stealth transition player Andrew Biers to take a 10-9 lead after three quarters.

San Jose's Brad Dairon tied the score 51 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Calgary scored four goals and held the Stealth scoreless the rest of the way for the win.

STEALTH NOTES: Both teams played the night before, with San Jose winning, 12-10, at the Pengrowth Saddledome ... Kelusky led all players with five goals, while Boyle and Fines paced the Stealth with two goals apiece ... Rosyski led everyone with five assists ... Calgary goaltender Curtis Palidwor stopped 14 of San Jose's 15 shots in the final quarter. He had 47 saves ... Cosmo and Rob Blasdell split the goaltending duties for San Jose ... Cosmo, who started, allowed eight goals and had 26 saves in taking the loss ... Derek and Curt Malawsky made their Stealth debuts against the Roughnecks. The brothers were acquired in separate trades before Friday night's game. Derek had a goal and three assists while Curt had a goal and an assist ... The Stealth has the next 13 days off and won't play again until Jan. 21 at Arizona. They return home to play hosts to Minnesota on Jan. 22.
