Sting Comeback Falls Short on Sunday Afternoon in Flint

It was a high scoring Sunday matinee in Flint. The Sting traveled to Flint for their first away game of the young 2019/20 OHL season, looking for their first win of the year.

Looking back at last year's games between these two teams, they always seemed to be high scoring affairs and this one would not be the one to break the trend.

The first period wasn't exactly what the boys were hoping for, as it was all Flint for almost the entirety of the period. The Firebirds jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with a goal off the rush from Cody Morgan. The Sting had a couple opportunities throughout the 1st, but no "grade A" chances to speak of.

The 1st period ended with three Flint goals in less than seven minutes. Vladislav Kolyachonok, captain Ty Dellandrea, and rookie Brennan Othmann scored in quick succession to dig a 4 goal hole for the Sting to get out of.

As the second period kicked off, the Sting seemed to wake up. You could notice a shift in energy and aggression, as the boys came out ready to get back into the game. Firebirds forward Hunter Holmes got ejected from the game at the 5:58 mark of the frame, and it was Brayden Guy who made him pay as he found the back of the net on the 5 minute powerplay. Seconds after Guy scored, Ethan Keppen scored on a shorthanded break for Flint. However, Jacob Perreault would get in on the powerplay fun, scoring his 1st of the year just over a minute later to make it a 5-2 game.

The trading of goals would continue in this crazy 2nd period as Keppen found the back of the net yet again for Flint, before Sean Josling would respond for the Sting. Just as the 2nd was coming to a close, it was Sarnia's first round CHL Import Pick Eric Hjorth scoring his 1st career OHL goal to make it a 6-4 game. Hjorth scored off of an absolute rocket of a shot from the slot, showing everyone just why he was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in this past NHL Draft.

The goal scoring would continue in the 3rd, as Evan Vierling would score Flint's 7th goal of the game off a nice passing play. Calvin Martin scored his 2nd goal of the season, a shorthanded goal, off the rebound from a breakaway attempt from Sean Josling. Evgeniy Oksentyuk would add an 8th goal for Flint as that about wrapped this game up.

Forward Sean Josling and Defenseman Eric Hjorth both had a strong performance on the score sheet, recording 4 points and 3 points respectively. Hjorth's points were the first 3 of his OHL career.

With this loss, the Sting fall to 0-3 on the season. The boys will return to the Progressive Auto Sales Arena to host the Barrie Colts on Friday October 4th.
