St. George RoadRunners News Release
Welcome back to the RoadRunners, Ruddy Yan. In his debut game of 2010, the outfielder went 3-for-5 including the game-winning RBI double in the 10th inning to hand the Yuma Scorpions their first loss in 11 games by a score of 6-5.
The win improved the RoadRunners record to 5-9. It was the first comeback win of 2010 and the first in extra frames in three tries. Yuma drops to 13-4 overall playing in their first game away from home.
Raymar Diaz started and tossed seven innings of one-run, six hit baseball striking out seven. Charlie Weatherby notched the win (1-1) hurling a scoreless top of the tenth.
Diaz battled Yuma starter Darryl Arreola through three scoreless before both teams broke the scoreboard seal in the fourth. Timothy Rodriguez lined a one-out single and scored from first on an RBI double by Santo DeLeon.
St. George responded by loading the bases with no one out. Jermy Acey led off with a double, Yosvany Almario walked and a Brett Flowers grounder led to a throwing error. With one out, C.J. Lang singled up the middle to score the equalizer. The Orange rally was crushed by a double play from Diaz - one of five DPs turned against the RoadRunners.
Both starters departed after seven leaving the game up to the bullpens.
Yuma struck for four runs in the eighth against Mitch Arnold. Pinch hitter Bubba Garcia wrapped a solo shot around the left field pole to give Yuma a 2-1 lead. The Scorps loaded the bags with two walks and a hit batter. Arnold would strikeout Rodriguez, but surrender a two-run single to DeLeon and an RBI fielder's choice to Ruben Sanchez to cap a 5-1 visitor lead.
STG bounced back with a run in the home eighth when Flowers doubled home Acey. Jordan Muir entered after the double and quashed the rally inducing a pair of ground balls.
Kyle Boggio allowed one hit and intentionally walked another in the ninth. A stellar diving catch by a debuting Carlos Sosa ended the Yuma frame.
Muir remained on the hill to try and wrap up the game. He got a leadoff ground out from D.J. Dixon before Yan and Henry Calderon both singled. The bases loaded on a four-pitch to Sosa. On a 2-2 pitch, Acey doubled to left-center scoring two and moving the tying run to third. Almario was plunked to reload the bags. Flowers walked on four pitches forcing home Sosa for the 5-5 tie. Scott Clement grounded to short for a double play to leave the potential game winner at third.
Weatherby scattered leadoff single to Rodriguez and almost got a double play thanks to another Sosa grab. DeLeon hit it to the wall in right that Sosa grabbed. Rodriguez had already rounded second at the time of the catch and scamoered back to first just in time to avoid the double up. Rodriguez tested the arm of David Ramirez but was nailed at second trying to steal. Sanchez tapped one in front of the plate to end the inning.
Jose Nieto topped the hill for the Scorpions in the 10th and hit Lang on a 2-2 count. Ramirez struck out setting the scene for Yan. On Nieto's first pitch, he lined a double to right-center that rolled to the wall allowing Lang to score from first with the game winner. Nieto (0-1) only worked through one-third on a n inning in his Yuma debut.
The RoadRunners pounded out 14 hits - Yan and Acey each had three. DeLeon paced the Yuma 10-hit attack with two hits and three RBI.
Game two of the series is Tuesday night from Bruce Hurst Field at 7:05pm. St. George is expected to start RHP Reed Dickert.
SportsRadio1210 and Network1Sports will have the live coverage beginning at 7pm with John Potter.
