Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce that they have finalized their on-field management team for the remainder of the 2010 Golden Baseball League season. Interim Field Manager Kip Gross has been promoted to full-time bench boss, while the club has also hired Tim Jones as a coach.
"This is the best move for our organization, and really a logical choice from the clubhouse perspective," said Seals President Darren Parker. "Kip brings a wealth of experience to our team, not only from his time in the Major Leagues but also from his years spent overseas."
Gross becomes the third Field Manager in club history, following Darrell Evans and Bret Boone, who resigned earlier this season to handle personal family matters. A former Major Leaguer with the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros, Gross is best known for his prolific career in the Japanese Pacific League. The native of Scottsbluff, Nebraska led both the Nippon Ham Fighters and the JPL in wins from 1995-1996, before retiring in the year 2000.
"I am really excited for this opportunity," said Gross. "I am confident that with a couple of adjustments we can turn this group of guys into one of the top teams in the league - and that process has already begun."
Jones, a former Oakland Athletics seventh-round pick, joins the Seals as a coach, working alongside player coaches Josh Arhart and Brian Rios. The Tustin, California native spent six seasons in minor league ball, compiling over 350 games in the Arizona, Northwest and California leagues. This will be his first experience coaching at a professional level.
The Seals now return home for the start of Sea Dog Days, and a three game series against the Calgary Vipers from June 8-10 at Royal Athletic Park. Game one goes tonight, a 7:05 p.m. start time and the contest will also be broadcast live via www.victoriaseals.ca and on 88.1 FM inside the park.
