
Outlaws Rally but Fall Short Against Toros

(Chico, CA June 8, 2010) The Chico Outlaws struggled against the Tuscon Toros Tuesday night at the Nett and fell 3-2 in game one of the three game series. The Outlaws started the night strong in the first inning, with Bobby Hill hitting a single, followed by a Mikael Jova base hit. On the Jova hit, Toros second baseman Jose Valdez uncorked a wild throw, allowing Hill to come home and score for a 1-0 lead.
Outlaws pitcher Javier Ortiz started the night off on the mound for Chico. In the second inning, Ortiz walked the Toros Wally Backman Jr. which brought Cristobal Santana up to bat. Santana poked a ground ball to center field, advancing Backman to third. Ryan Priddy then hit an RBI single, driving in Backman home to score, making the score 1-1.
Tucson pitcher Vince Davis then hit a bases-loaded RBI groundout, scoring Santana comes home for Tucson making the score 2-1.
In the top of the seventh inning,the Toros Luis Apodaca hit an RBI single into left field, driving home Priddy and extending Tucson's lead to 3-1.
In the home half of the eighth, Outlaws first baseman John Urick hit an RBI single off Toros reliever Toby Nordman to bring home Jova from second base and close the gap to 3-2.
Toros closer Emiliano Fruto, the former Seattle Mariner, was able to slam the door on the Outlaws in the bottom of the ninth inning after catcher Robby Alcombrack led off the inning with a single. The loss snapped the Outlaws four game winning streak, making them 12-4 overall. Tucson improved to 9-8 for the year.
Game two of the three game series is Wednesday night. Leftie Mark McLemore starts for the Outlaws against the Toros Albie Lopez, who won a World Series title with Arizona in 2001.
