New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The Sussex Skyhawks recorded seven extra-base hits en route to a 12-4 win over the New Jersey Jackals on a muggy Tuesday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Can-Am League RBI leader Caleb Stewart drove in five runs for the Skyhawks in a 3-for-3 night at the plate.
After Sussex gained a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out triple by center fielder Carl Loadenthal and a two-run home run down the right field line by first baseman Kris Sanchez, New Jersey counted in the bottom of the second when center fielder Jeff Grose laced a two-run single and left fielder Mike Consolmagno lifted a sacrifice fly to even the score. The teams exchanged runs in the third before the Skyhawks plated the game's final eight runs, including a five-run assault in the top of the fifth inning that featured three doubles.
For New Jersey, second baseman Abraham Nunez and Grose each collected three hits with Grose driving in a pair of runs.
Jackals starter Nick Asselin (1-6) dropped his fifth straight decision after allowing 10 runs on 11 hits in five innings. Sussex starter Dan Berlind (4-1) surrendered four runs, three earned, in five frames to earn the win. New Jersey's Luis Fernandez contributed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen in the loss while Sussex relievers Matt Salvato and Michael Streaman each tossed two shutout frames.
The Jackals (17-26) and Skyhawks (23-20) have a quick turnaround as they'll take the field for the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. when New Jersey sends left-hander A.J. Wideman (3-4, 3.97) to the mound against Sussex right-hander Dan Berlind (2-1, 4.65). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
