Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
Former Major League Baseball second baseman Steve Sax will be on hand for Orem's contest Saturday evening against the Billings Mustangs.
Prior to the contest, Sax will be throwing out the first pitch. He will stay on hand for the duration of the game and be available to sign autographs on the third base concourse during the second, third, and fourth innings.
Sax, a career .281 hitter, spent the beginning of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers from August of 1981 to the end of the 1988 season. He also played with the Yankees and White Sox before closing out his career with the Oakland Athletics in 1994.
He was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 1982, his first full season in the league. Sax played on five All-Star teams during his career, three times for the National League (1982, 1983, 1986) and twice for the American League (1989 and 1990).
"We're excited to bring such a high caliber player and individual into our ballpark for the evening," Co-General Managers Ryan Pace and Zachary Fraser said. "This is all part of our continuing effort to please our fans and provide them with extra incentive to come out to the park."
Not only does the game feature Steve Sax, but it also marks the final meeting of the regular season between the top two teams in the Pioneer League. The Owlz are the first half champion from the Southern Division. Billings captured the same title in the Northern Division.
A few individual tickets for Saturday's game still remain and can be purchased by visiting the stadium box office on the campus of UVSC, at any Smith Tix location, or online at oremowlz.com.
