Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Bossier City, Louisiana--Fort Worth Brahmas goaltender Larry Sterling turned in a record setting performance on Saturday night, stopping 57 of the 60 Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs shots he faced to lead the Brahmas to a dramatic 4-3 regulation win over their Northeast Division rivals.
The 57 save effort by Sterling established a Brahmas franchise record for most saves in a game by a goaltender. The previous team record of 55 was set on December 29, 2001 by Kory Cooper in a game also played against the Mudbugs in Bossier City.
While Sterling provided the defense for the Brahmas in the win, it was rookie forward Beau McLaughlin that paced the Fort Worth offensive attack. McLaughlin scored the first three goals of the game for Fort Worth, one in the first period and two in the second period, to record the first Brahmas hat trick of the 2005-2006 CHL season. The former UConn standout completed his hat trick at the 7:47 mark of the second period with a powerplay goal that tied the game at three. McLaughlin's offensive outburst helped the Brahmas offset a big second period by the Bugs, a period that saw Chris Brassard, Brett Smith, and Jason Basile all light the lamp for Bossier-Shreveport.
In the third period, Fort Worth received the game winning goal from left wing Wes Mason. Mason collected a centering pass from rookie forward Noah Katz in front of the Bossier net and was able to push the puck past Bugs goaltender David Cacciola at the 11:17 mark of the third. Given the lead, Sterling did the rest for the Brahmas, making several spectacular saves in the game's final minutes to prevent the Bugs from scorng the tying goal.
Cacciola, a rookie from Providence University, took the loss in net for the Bugs, allowing the four Fort Worth goals on 35 shots.
The win for the Brahmas, now 13-22-5 on the year, was their fourth of the season over the Mudbugs (19-13-5). Fort Worth will next be in action on Thursday, Feb. 2, when they host the Austin Ice Bats at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
