Mississippi Braves News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - Landon Stephens became the fifth Mississippi Braves player to hit 20 home runs in a single season on Saturday night, but the M-Braves (51-66, 18-31) fell to the Montgomery Biscuits (64-55, 28-22), 3-2, at Riverwalk Stadium. The loss clinched the first-place Biscuits the series win. The M-Braves have dropped 13 of their last 15 one-run games since June 18.
Drew Campbell started the scoring for Mississippi in game five on Saturday night with a one-out solo home run to straightaway center field. The home run was his ninth of the season and pushed his on-base streak to 15 games.
Stephens hit the first pitch of the third inning 416 feet over the left field wall to push the lead to 2-0. Stephens is now 5-for-7 in the series with two home runs and a double. The Hamilton, OH native joins Drew Lugbauer (2022, 2023), Shea Langeliers (2021), Ryan Casteel (2019), and Ernesto Mejia (2011) with 20 home runs in a single season in club history. Stephens (20) and Lugbauer (22) become the first duo to hit the 20 home run mark in the same season in team history.
On the mound, Domingo Robles was outstanding. The 25-year-old struck out six through four scoreless innings and faced the minimum from the third inning to the sixth inning. Robles surrendered an infield single and walk to begin the bottom of the sixth, and Tanner Murray doubled to left, scoring two to tie the game. Robles logged his second-straight quality start, tossing 6.0 innings of two-run baseball, five hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.
Hayden Harris needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order and strike out two in the seventh inning. The Biscuits rallied with two outs against M-Braves reliever Trey Riley (L, 2-2). After back-to-back two-out walks, Kenny Piper singled in the go-ahead run to make it 3-2 in the eighth.
Stephens paced the offense, finishing 2-for-2 with a homer, double, and walk. Brandon Parker hit in the cleanup spot Saturday and went 2-for-4 with a double. The Saucier native has been on base seven times in his first three games with Mississippi. Cal Conley added to his solid week by going 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot.
The series concludes on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium and will mark the club's final meeting in 2023. The M-Braves will start RHP Alan Rangel (2-14. 5.04) against RHP Sean Hunley (3-4, 3.26) for the Biscuits. The first pitch is at 3:33 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, MiLB First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park for the final homestand of 2023 on Tuesday, August 29, welcoming Rocket City, August 29 to September 3, and Tennessee Smokies, September 5-10. Fans can purchase tickets by visiting mississippibraves.com.
