Stefan's OT Strike Helps Hawks Hold off Americans

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - After a late Tri-City tally forced overtime, James Stefan ripped home the deciding goal on the power play at 1:37 of the extra frame to help the Winterhawks take the extra point by a 4-3 final in Kennewick.

As the Americans' penalty killers tried to weather Portland's power play, Stefan intercepted an attempted clear at the blue line with plenty of space to skate to the top of the right-wing circle and wire a shot past the stick side of Tomas Suchanek to win the game.

Portland started the game well as Jack O'Brien grabbed his third goal in his last three games, intercepting a Tri-City breakout bid before snapping a shot past the shoulder of Suchanek for the only scoring play of the opening frame.

The Americans responded early in the second period as Samuel Huo potted his 29th, but Kyle Chyzowski restored Portland's lead midway through the frame on a crafty give-and-go cycle play with James Stefan. Just over two minutes later, Marcus Nguyen took a Cross Hanas pass in stride as he streaked through the neutral zone before dancing past a Tri-City defender and roofing a shot over Suchanek's glove for a two-goal Portland lead.

Not going away quietly, Tri-City's Petr Moravec cut the Hawks' lead back to one before the end of the middle frame, and Parker Bell netted the tying tally midway through the third as his shot on a rush beat Dante Giannuzzi to force overtime.

Giannuzzi finished with 20 saves on 23 shots, picking up his first win since March 5, also against Tri-City. The Winterhawks are back on the ice Friday as they wrap up the regular season with a home duel against Everett. Puck drop at the VMC is set for 7:00 P.M.
