Sanford Mainers News Release
NORTH ADAMS, M.A. - For the third time in as many games, the North Adams SteepleCats (11-9) defeated the Sanford Mainers (9-11), this time 7-4 at Joe Wolfe Field.
The SteepleCats did it on the back of another excellent start from Braxton Wilks (Abilene Christian) who went six innings, allowed four hits, two runs, two earned, two walks and struck out four. Wilks earned the win, his second in eight days against Sanford.
Sanford scored early in the game, crossing two runs in the top of the 1st. Ako Thomas (Michigan) singled to begin the frame, and promptly found his way into scoring position when Zach Jancarski (Maryland) doubled. Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) knocked in Thomas on a ground out to second base, and Todd Czinege (Villanova) hit a sacrifice fly to put across Jancarski for the early 2-0 lead.
North Adams battled back, scoring once in each of the first three innings to retake the lead. Nick Riotto (Pennsylvania State) singled in the first, and later scored on a wild pitch, while Noah Vaughan (Texas Arlington) walked in the second and came around on a sacrifice fly. C.J. Price hit a solo-shot to put the SteepleCats up 3-2 in the 3rd.
The hometown SteepleCats were able to crack the game open in 5th inning, scoring three times to make it 6-2. North Adams got a two-run, bases clearing triple from Vaughan to cap off the inning and put the game out of reach.
The Mainers struck back for two more in the 7th, when Thomas singled in Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) and Jordan Powell (Rhode Island).
Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) hit a double in his first at-bat with the Mainers in the 8th, as a pinch hitter.
The Mainers will celebrate the 4th with an off-day, but get back to it on July 5 when they travel to Montpelier, Vermont to face the Vermont Mountaineers for only the second time this season. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM, with pregame action beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network and The Legends in Sanford 102.3 FM and 1220 AM at 6:15 PM.
