Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Up 2-1 heading into the second period, the Chicago Steel utilized their ability to finish scoring opportunities and scored three goals, including two in the final minute, to pull away. The visitors topped the Dubuque Fighting Saints 7-2 on Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Chicago's win clinched them a spot in the Clark Cup playoffs.
The game turned when Matt Coronato scored on the only power play of the night in the midst of a broken Fighting Saints line change, and just 43 seconds later, Josh Doan added another goal to extend the Steel's lead to 5-1 heading into the second intermission. Joe Miller scored at the 7:16 mark of the second period to punctuate the outburst. Chicago scored on three of eight shots in the middle frame.
Dubuque outshot Chicago 30-18 for the game, but did not enjoy the same offensive success they had the night prior. Simon Latkoczy stopped 28 of the 30 Fighting Saints shots fired his way, all at even strength, to give Chicago the win.
The Saints tied the game at 1-1 after Sean Farrell opened the scoring just four minutes in. At 8:27, P.J. Fletcher crisscrossed into the offensive zone with Evan Stella and worked a give-and-go with the Swedish defenseman who scored his third goal of the season for the Saints. It was Stella's first goal since November 28, 2020.
However, Coronato scored one of his two goals on the night to give the Steel a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission, even while being outshot 10-3.
Miller and Farrell responded to a goal by Saints defenseman Ian Pierce to cap the scoring and give Chicago the win. Hobie Hedquist took over in net for Lukas Parik after 40 minutes of action.
The Saints are back in action Thursday, April 8 in Muskegon to start a three-in-three series with the Lumberjacks at 6:10 p.m. central. The game marks the first time facing off against the Jacks since December 30, 2020. Catch the action on the Fighting Saints Radio Network, or on HockeyTV.
