Idaho Steelheads News Release
Steel Reel It took 65 minutes of hockey and five rounds in the shootout to find a winner, but the Idaho Steelheads earned their first road victory of the season Friday night in Loveland to move back to .500 and within two points of the Eagles atop the Mountain Division. On Saturday the teams meet again, with Idaho looking to wrap up a three-game road trip on a winning note and the Eagles hoping to halt a four-game winless streak.
The Steelheads were held off the board for the first 44 minutes of hockey on Friday by Colorado's Kent Simpson, but broke through on the power play at 4:31 of the third period with Jefferson Dahl's 4th goal of the season. That goal tied the game, matching a power play goal by Luke Salazar in the first period. There would be no scoring the rest of the way, with Simpson and Idaho's Landon Bow each stopping 31 shots. Joe Basaraba would net the shootout's only goal in the fifth round to give Idaho their second win this season in the breakaway contest.
The Streak Continues... When the Steelheads need a big play, it seems captain Jefferson Dahl is the man to come through of late. Dahl's power play goal to tie the game in the third period extended his points streak to a career-high seven games, during which he has four goals and 12 points. Friday was an encore of Dahl's two-goal game in Rapid City two days earlier. Dahl's power play tally was his first this year after leading the team last season with ten, and it moves him into a tie for fourth place in the league's scoring race at the start of action Saturday.
You Go, Bow... Landon Bow made 32 saves on Friday night, including 16 in the third period and overtime and all five Colorado attempts in the shootout. Bow also made a highlight reel save on Ryan Harrison in the third period and a breakaway stop on Cole Sanford with time winding down in regulation. Just six games into his pro career, the rookie goaltender has been solid for Idaho with a 3-2-1record, along with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. Those numbers have gotten a boost from Bow's last two performances, in which he's stopped a combined 70 of 72 shots (.972) in 124:45 (0.96 GAA).
Special Teams Sparkle... The Steelheads' streak of five consecutive games with a power play goal ended on Wednesday in Rapid City, but the man-advantage got right back to work on Friday to make it six goals in the last seven contests. It was successful and timely, taking advantage of a four minute double-minor for roughing on Colorado's Darryl Bootland. The penalty kill surrendered a goal in the first period but locked down for the rest of the game to kill three of four penalties. That included killing a two minute 4-on-3 disadvantage in overtime. The penalty kill is 14-for-17 (82.4 percent) over the last five games.
Grounding the Eagles... The Eagles have numerous scoring threats, two of which factored in on Colorado's lone goal of Friday night. Luke Salazar's power play goal extended his goal-scoring streak to five games and Casey Pierro-Zabotel's assist on the play gave him 13 points (third in ECHL), and points in eight of nine games this season. But the Steelheads did manage to keep scorer Jesse Mychan under wraps, putting an end to his seven-game points streak. Cole Sanford had several prime chances, but the league's co-leader in rookie goal-scoring was kept off the sheet as well.
