Salazar Stretches Goal Streak to Five Games as Eagles Fall in a Shootout
November 5, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, CO. - Eagles forward Luke Salazar scored a goal for the fifth straight game, but Jefferson Dahl's power-play goal in the third period forced overtime and a shootout and sent Colorado to a 2-1 loss on Friday at the Budweiser Events Center.
Salazar put the Eagles on top just 4:35 into the opening period of play when he snapped a wrister past Steelheads goaltender Landon Bow from between the circles to give Colorado the 1-0 advantage.
Neither team would be able to find the back of the net in the second period, as Bow and Eagles goaltender Kent Simpson traded dramatic saves throughout the evening.
Moving into the final frame of regulation, Eagles forward Darryl Bootland would draw a four-minute double-minor for roughing and Dahl would capitalize. The Steelheads captain uncorked a slapshot that caught a big chunk of Simpson and trickled into the net to tie the game at 1-1 at the 4:31 mark of the third period.
The game would remain knotted at 1-1 heading into overtime, as Colorado would fail to convert on a power play in the extra session, eventually forcing a shootout. Bow would deny all five of Colorado's shooters, while forward Joe Basaraba buried the Steelheads' lone goal in the shootout to give Idaho the 2-1 win.
Simpson and Bow both finished the night making 31 saves on 32 shots. Colorado earned a point in the standings in the defeat and now stand atop the ECHL's Mountain Division with 11 points.
Colorado continues its homestand as the Eagles take on the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday, November 5th at 7:05pm MT. The game will be preceded by the first-ever Colorado Eagles Alumni game at 4:30pm.
