Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (1-0-0) began the Hardy Sauter coaching era on a high note with a 5-0 win over the Victoria Salmon Kings (0-1-0); Tyler Beskorowany earned the shutout in his first professional start in goal, and five different Steelheads scored in the win.
Geoff Irwin opened the scoring on the power play for the Steelheads at 13:12 of the opening period. Irwin batted a rebound to beat Victoria goalie David Shantz. Tyler Ludwig and Mike Gabinet assisted on the goal that made the score 1-0. The goal was the first professional tally for Irwin.
Less than four minutes later at 16:57 of the first period Mark Derlago knocked a puck out of the air as he gathered a rebound near the right post of the Victoria goal; the puck found the back of the goal, and gave Idaho a 2-0 lead. John-Scott Dickson and John Swanson assisted on Derlago's first of the season. He had 42 goals in 2009-10.
Kael Mouillierat put Idaho on top 3-0 at 7:13 of the second period with a wrist shot into the top-right corner of the Victoria net. Ludwig and Gabinet assisted on Mouillierat's first goal of the season.
With Idaho already leading by a trio of goals, Matt McKnight found captain Marty Flichel open in the left circle from behind the goal; Flichel capitalized on the open look at 17:01, and gave the Steelheads a 4-0 lead on another power play goal. Guillaume Monast also collected an assist on the goal.
The only tally of the third period went for the Steelheads again, as Mouillierat and Michael Neal cruised into the offensive zone with a two-on-one. Mouillierat found Neal, who made a move to beat Shantz, and Idaho took a 5-0 lead. Swanson assisted on the goal; his second helper of the night.
Tyler Beskorowany stopped all 24 shots he saw as he earned the shutout in his first professional start; he is 1-0-0. David Shantz stopped 26 of 31 shots, and his record falls to 0-1-0 with the loss.
The Steelheads and Salmon Kings will battle again Saturday night at Qwest Arena.
