Steelhawks Raid Richmond for Friday Tilt
June 3, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (4-4) will be facing the Richmond Raiders (3-5) for the first time this season when the team travels to Virginia for Friday night football. The teams created an intense rivalry last year, after having three games against each other last year. The Steelhawks are looking to turn things around in June after struggling the past four weeks. They will need to rebound with a win in Richmond to maintain second place in the National Conference.
The Steelhawks have been struggling offensively this season. There has been a constant rotation of wide receivers for QB Adam Bednarik (110-185, 1,265 yds, 21 tds, 8 ints) to get used to. The last two weeks have seen WRs Richie Martin (26 catches, 324 yds, 8 tds) and Brandon Renford (24 catches for 320 yds, 6 tds) stepping up. Martin had four catches for four touchdowns in last week's game against Columbus.
The Steelhawks' offensive line will have to contend with a dangerous Raiders defensive line that leads the league in sacks. DL Devin Jones (30 tackles, 14 tfl) leads the league with 10.5 sacks; and LB Preston Hines, DL Christian Lacey, and LB Gus Tyson all have five or more sacks.
Lehigh Valley's defense has been led by DB Dwayne Hollis, who leads the league in tackles (40 tackles) and is tied for the most interceptions (6). Hollis and the rest of the Steelhawks defense faces a familiar face in Richmond's backfield. QB Phil Konopka (93-157, 1,052 yds, 17 tds, 7 ints) was in Lehigh Valley's training camp to start the season. Last week he was named PIFL Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Raiders' win over the Harrisburg Stampede in week nine, completing 21 of 30 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns, and rushing for another score.
This weekend's game will kick off Friday night at 7:00pm EST. Check for score updates on the Steelhawks Facebook and Twitter accounts. The PIFL website and Facebook page should also have updates. The Steelhawks will be on the road for two more away games. They will be back in Georgia to take on the Fire next week. They return to the Lehigh Valley for their final home game, and their 2014 PIFL regular season finale, for a June 28th matchup with rival Richmond Raiders. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night, 1,000 team photos will be given out to fans.
