Alabama Hammers News Release

The Alabama Hammers visit the Lions of Columbus, Georgia for game nine of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) on Saturday, June 7, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Hammers are coming off a 59-45 loss to the American Division leading Nashville Venom (6-2) on Monday night in Nashville. A close game throughout, the Hammers were mostly insufficient in the Venom's red zone having to settle for three field goals after the Hammers' offense stalled.

Hammers' head coach Dean Cokinos said, "We had plenty of opportunities on both offense and defense, but did not execute effectively. We had mental and physical errors at pivotal times in the game that certainly affected the outcome in a close game."

This Saturday, the Hammers (3-5) face the Lions (4-4), which is coming off an impressive 54-42 victory over the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks. With the Hammers having just played on Monday night in Nashville, the squad is pressed against just three days to prepare for the Lions, which the Hammers defeated 73-53 on May 17 at the Von Braun Center.

"We are on a short week, so we will have to regroup quickly and try and prepare for the Lions, which is a tough opponent, especially at the Lions home field," added Cokinos.

The Lions are No. 1 in PIFL statistics in scoring offense (55.5-points per game), touchdowns scored (62), points scored kicking (65), total offense (293-yds per game) and average yards per play (6.6). The Hammers are No. 3 in scoring defense (41.9-points per game) and No. 4 in total defense (235.5-yds). These statistics indicate the Hammers will have its hands full against a good opponent in a hostile atmosphere.

The game versus the Lions, with a 6 p.m. kickoff at the Columbus Civic Center, will be available on the Hammers Radio Network, which is broadcast on WAFN-FM, 92.7 Fun Radio-Arab, WZZN-FM, 97.7 The Zone-Huntsville and WWIC-AM, 1050-Scottsboro. Michael St. John and Steve Moulton will handle the play-by-play.
