
Hammers Close Season With Exciting Victory

Opening fast with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Sutphen to Mico McSwain on the game's opening play and finishing with a spectacular 10-yard touchdown run by Sutphen with 52-seconds remaining in the game, the Alabama Hammers defeated the Columbus Lions 60-57 on Saturday night to complete their season with two consecutive victories and a 5-7 record in the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL). The game was played on the Huntsville Hospital/TOC Sports Field of the Von Braun Center.
The visiting Lions (8-3) remain atop the PIFL standings going into the post season playoffs, but were outscored by the Hammers 18-8 in the fourth quarter as Alabama was led by quarterback Sutphen (18-32-0/302-5) who threw for five TDs and zero INTs. His receiving corps was equally spread out among McSwain (7-129-2), Maurice Dupree (6-121-3) and Rod Brown (5-52-0). Ervin McGuire added his lone score on a four-yard run and kicker Brandon Rutherford had 11-points on the night including a 47-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.
The Hammers' defense rose to the occasion numerous times throughout the game holding the league's top rated scoring offense to just 274-yards total offense. Savante Davenport, Taylor Dammerman, Jeremiah Zene and Gini Ibe led the Hammers on defense.
The evening included AUSA Military Appreciation Night and Kids Cap Night sponsored by Coca-Cola and WAFF Channel 48.
