Steeldogs Building Off South Georgia Win

Alabama Steeldogs News Release

Birmingham, Ala. - The Alabama Steeldogs and Louisville Fire come in to this Saturday's game at the BJCC looking to build off of their first wins of the season.

The Steeldogs downed South Georgia last week in their home opener while the Fire won their first game of the season against the Cincinnati Jungle Kats after starting 2007 0-2.

Steeldogs head coach Ron Selesky said that while he was happy with a number of things in the South Georgia matchup, his team still has a long way to go.

"We played good enough to win, but still too many mistakes," Selesky said. "We played hard, fought back and never quit, which means a lot, but we still have a lot of work to do."

The two teams are locked up in the all-time series at four wins apiece, but the Steeldogs hold a slight advantage in points scored at 408-346.

Louisville quarterback Matt Sauk has looked solid under center for the Fire this season after taking over the starting spot in Week 2. Sauk has completed over 60 percent of his passes in two games, throwing for 589 yards 11 touchdowns and only one interception. Those numbers leave Selesky's secondary in the opponent's cross-hairs just a week after they gave up 348 yards through the air and seven passing touchdowns.

"Our secondary got their baptism by fire against South Georgia and took some lumps," Selesky said. "Overall, they kept competing, and they will only get better with time. They are young but eager to compete and win."

A Steeldogs' win would give them a 2-1 record as they prepare to travel to Tulsa, Ok. to face the Talons on April 28th.

The Steeldogs kick off against Louisville at 7 p.m. this Saturday at the BJCC Arena. Tickets are available by calling Ticketmaster at 715-6000 or by logging on to steeldogs.com.

The game can also be heard live on the Alabama Steeldogs Flagship station WSPZ 690 "The Animal" with veteran broadcasters Matt Coulter and Roger Shultz calling the action.
