GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel scored four unanswered goals in the third period to rally and defeat the Tri-City Storm, 5-2, Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Nick Abruzzese and Aaro Vidgren each notched a pair of goals for Chicago (23-22-1-4, 51 pts.). Oskar Autio made 18 saves in his 18th win of the season.
Storm center Johnny McDermott scored a shorthanded goal with 1:01 remaining in the first period to open the scoring for the visitors. Tyler Madden stole the puck and slid a pass over to a streaking McDermott, who fired a heavy wrist shot over Autio's blocker.
The two teams then exchanged power-play goals midway through the second frame. Samuel Bucek's shot was denied by a left-pad save from Tri-City goaltender Jake Barczewski, but Abruzzese was there to slap home a rebound at the 7:10 mark.
Less than three minutes later, Tri-City's Filip Forsmark deflected in a feed from defenseman Ronnie Attard to put Tri-City back on top, 2-1.
Chicago dominated the third period, outshooting the Storm by a 14-5 margin. Vidgren scored at the 5:14 mark, cashing in at the top of the crease on a centering faceoff win from Baker Shore in the right-wing circle. At 12:58, Vidgren scored again, this time finishing off a wild net-front scramble to give Chicago the lead with his 20th goal of the season.
Abruzzese converted on a partial breakaway at 15:10, shoveling a backhand shot over Barczewski's glove, and Samuel Bucek closed the game with an empty-net goal as time expired.
Chicago outshot Tri-City 34-20 in the game. The Steel converted on two-of-five power-play opportunities while the Storm scored on one-of-two.
The Steel and the Storm (27-19-1-2, 57 pts.) rematch Sunday at Fox Valley Ice Arena with puck drop set for 3:05 p.m.
Sunday's matinee rematch includes a Rusty Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Waubonsee Community College for the first 500 fans in attendance, as well as full-team post-game autographs.
