Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa. - The Quad City Steamwheelers today announced that they will be presenting the final installment of their "Winning With the 'Wheelers" seminar on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Lonnie Ray's Champion Wings in Rock Island, Ill. The program, which teaches children and adults alike the importance of professionalism in their everyday life, is free and open to anybody who would like to attend.
Lonnie Ray Westerfield, who owns and operates Lonnie Ray's Champion Wings, located at 1728 9th Street in Rock Island, and is a first year "Training Table Sponsor" for the Steamwheelers, is widely known in the area for his charitable work, especially with underprivileged children in the Quad Cities area. He also serves as a mentor for a group of more than 20 Rock Island kids, all of whom will be in attendance.
"We want to be a positive influence in the community for these kids and events like this only serve to help that goal," Westerfield said. "We have participated in community events like this before, and to now have the Steamwheelers coming in to lend a hand, things can only get better. The players come into the restaurant almost every day, and these kids see them and know right away who they are, and they look up to them. So to be able to interact with them like this will be something truly special, and with the message that they are sending out I think that it will be something that everybody who attends will remember for a long time."
"We have had tremendous feedback from the program so far and I hope that this event proves to be as or more rewarding than the rest," said Steamwheelers Secondary coach Ed Langford who founded the "Winning With the 'Wheelers Program". "This is the first chance that we've had to go into an inner city neighborhood and speak to kids and parents in a setting like this. We know that everyone at Lonnie Ray's is active in supporting this community, and if we can assist their efforts in any way possible we will be more than glad to do so."
The presentation is expected to last approximately one hour with all Quad City coaches and nearly the entire roster in attendance. Following the presentation, the Steamwheeler players and coaches will sign autographs and mingle with all children and adults in attendance while playing with the Steamwheelers inflatable football field. All children will also receive a complimentary voucher which can be redeemed for tickets, good for them and a parent or guardian, to any of the 'Wheelers three remaining 2005 home games and an ice cream cone courtesy of Lonnie Ray's.
The day after the speech, on Saturday, June 18, the Steamwheelers are back in action when they host the Albany Conquest at 7:30 p.m. at OS Field at The MARK of the Quad Cities.
