Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- Since winning the ArenaCup Championship last year the Firecats as a team have not missed a beat. At 9-1 the ‘Cats are off to the best ten game start in team history and also find themselves tied with the best record in the league. While the guys are all working together toward a common goal, the team's success can be linked to a number of individual record breaking performances.

Quarterback Chris Wallace passed Ken Mastrole's single game TD pass record of 8 by tossing 9 as part of an 18 of 25 for 253 yard performance leading the team to a 68-50 win over Arkansas this year. With 57 touchdown passes already this season he currently leads the league's gun slingers and needs just 25 more to crack the top ten in af2 history for the most passing touchdowns in one year.

Since returning just 4 weeks ago, Cainon Lamb has moved into second all-time in the af2 for career touchdown receptions. Currently he has 101 leaving him only 12 behind Mitch Allner's 113 career scores. Cainon is the leagues #2 man in combined TD's with 109 trips into opponent's end zones either by rushing, receiving or returning kicks and has scored 672 career non-kicking points in the league, also 2nd best all-time. Lamb has also moved up to the #7 all-time spot in career receiving yards in the af2 with 4,070. The team career leader in Kickoff Return Yards (1,564) and Combined Return Yards (1,707) holds a number of single season records with the Firecats including Receptions (110), Receiving Yards (1,297) and Receiving TD's (31) all of which came in the 2003 season. He also currently holds the team record with 6 TD Receptions in 1 game.

The Firecats' other big receiving threat, Magic Benton, is on the brink of breaking Lamb's team record of most receiving touchdowns in a season. Through just ten games Benton has crossed the goal line 27 times. This former All Big East player from Miami holds career team records in scoring, receptions, receiving yards and receiving TD's. Benton is on pace to break into the top ten in af2 history for most receiving touchdowns in a season and he currently sits in the #3 all-time TD reception spot with 91 career scores and is # 5 all-time in career receiving yards with 4,117.

With six rushing touchdowns this year, Fullback Steve Gorrie has become the Firecats' all-time touchdown rushing leader with 23 passing former Firecat Johnny Frost's mark of 21. Gorrie was already the team's career rushing yards leader at the beginning of the season, and has recently moved up to 3rd all-time in the af2 with 799 yards in 2 years.

On defense, Roy "Snake" Stabler passed his former teammate Quincy Sorrell for the most tackles all-time in af2. Sorrell's record was 287.5 which Stabler passed against Louisville in week 8, and against Amarillo in week 9, Stabler became the 1st player in af2 history to reach the 300 tackle milestone.

WR/DB Brent Burnside has 2 INT's this year giving him 18 for his career, good enough for 8th all time. DS Kelly Snell is keeping pace with Burnside however as he leads the team with 3 picks this year and is now tied for 8th all-time with 18 INT's as well. Not to be outdone, kicker Brandon Kornblue has been doing his fair share of damage to the record books too. He already held the af2 record for most career points by a kicker before the season started (currently 383). So far this year, Kornblue has moved to number one in af2 history in PAT's made in a career (272) and PAT's attempted in a career (344). With 37 career field goals made, he is just one behind the af2 all-time kicker, James Thomas.

The 2004 ArenaCup Champion Florida Firecats host the Manchester Wolves this weekend. The Firecats won the previous meeting 32-26 in overtime way back in week 2. The Firecats will have an opportunity to win the South Division, for the 2nd year in a row, and take a big leg up in the race for home field advantage in the American Conference throughout the post-season. This game has all the makings of a classic and is easily the biggest match up in all the af2 this year. Tickets are available now! Call (239) 390-2287 today to reserve your seats!
