Steamers Williams Tosses No-No vs. Florence

EDENTON, N.C- Right-handed pitcher John Williams threw the first no-hitter in Edenton Steamers' (24-8, 4-2) history in a 4-0 win over the Florence RedWolves (15-13, 1-3) on Wednesday night at Historic Hicks Field.

Williams (George Mason University), making his third start and eighth appearance overall toed the rubber against lefty Tim Hill for the RedWolves, making his fifth start and eighth appearance overall.

Through three and a half innings the game went without a hit until the bottom of the fourth when Nick Thompson (East Carolina University) was hit by a pitch to begin the ball game. After a sacrifice bunt by Laz Villa (Reedley College), Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) picked up his 14th RBI with a double that gave Edenton a 1-0 lead. Miller later scored himself when he stole third base and came home on a throwing error by the RedWolves catcher Matt Rubino for a 2-0 lead. Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) singled and scored on Nick Miller's (University of Northern Colorado) RBI single for a 3-0 Steamers lead.

Hampton added a solo home run, his fourth of the season and 28th RBI in the bottom of the sixth for the final run of the ballgame and a 4-0 Steamer advantage.

Williams retired the first 12 straight RedWolves he faced to begin the ball game before he plunked Zach Bellinger to begin the fifth inning. Stephen Dowling followed by reaching on a fielder's choice before Williams retired Joe Camp and Matt Rubino to end the inning. The only other base runner Florence picked up all game was a walk to Bellinger in the top of the seventh.

15 of Williams 27 outs recorded were in the air and he repeatedly was able to pitch from behind in the count to retire Florence hitters, logging 111 pitches in his nine inning, no-hit effort.

Williams etches his name in Steamer lore as the first pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter in the franchises 16-year storied history with his final line nine innings pitched, no hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts. The win improves his record to 3-0 on the season. Hill, with the loss, falls to 1-2 on the season.

Edenton improves to 24-8 and 4-2 in the second half, notching their fourth straight win while Florence falls to 15-13 and 1-3 in the second half.

Edenton travels to Wilmington tomorrow to take on the Sharks before travelling to Wilson on Friday to take on the Tobs for the first time in the second half.
