
Sharks Fall to Steamers

Wilmington, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks (3-4, 17-17) came up just short at home on Thursday night 3-2 against the Edenton Steamers (5-2, 25-8).
The pitchers dealt on the hill for both squads as Adam Bray picked up the win. He threw six innings of scoreless baseball as he gave up five hits and struck out nine. Jake McCoy was credited with his seventh save of the year for the Steamers. Alex Luna picked up the loss, but threw well as he went six innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out nine.
The Steamers took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a one out two RBI double off the bat of Adam Kirsch his 16th double of the season. Edenton extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single off the bat of Sam Bumpers to make it 3-0 in favor of the Steamers.
The Sharks struggled to find runs in the first seven innings as they stranded the bases loaded twice, but were able to break through in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Stephens hit a ball hard at the Steamers third baseman Josh Hampton as the ball kicked off his glove into left field to score Mike Dunster and Andrew Amaro to make it a 3-2 ball game.
The Sharks were unable to pick up a run in the ninth as McCoy picked up the save. Cody Dolan went 2-4 for the Sharks. Sam Bumpers went 2-4 with an RBI for Edenton. The Wilmington Sharks will play host to the Asheboro Copperheads at Buck Hardee field on Friday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
The Wilmington Sharks are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1000 alumni drafted and 62 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their major league debut so far.
