Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC- Quintavious Drains allowed one run in six innings on the mound for the Steamers and his offense scored 14 runs in support to give Edenton a 14-6 victory over the Petersburg Generals to open the second half of the Coastal Plain League Season.
Edenton opened the scoring early and often in the bottom of the first. After a walk and an infield single, Joey Wendle added to his team leading RBI total with a single to give Edenton a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Brett Christopher hit into a fielder's choice to plate Ryan Brenner and give Edenton a 2-0 lead. Mitch Wells knocked in two more to push the lead to 4-0 and finish the steamer scoring for the inning.
In the bottom of the second Edenton was gifted a lead-off walk to Tim Saunders. Brian Blasik connected with his first home run of the year; a two run blast to make it a 6-0 Steamer lead. With two outs and the bases empty J.T Wauford walked the bases loaded and Mitch Wells hit a two-run double to make it 8-0 Steamers. Two more walks were issued to Steamers hitters and Saunders, batting for the second time in the inning obliged with a two-run single to make it 10-0 Steamers.
Through two full innings Edenton had ten runs on six hits and eight walks, and led the Generals 10-0.
After a scoreless third inning the Steamers offense reawakened in the bottom of the fourth. Again with two outs and the bases empty a walk started a rally against James Heine the new Generals pitcher. Following the walk, Brian Blasik singled and Ryan Brenner plated Saunders with a single to make 11-0 Edenton. An infield single by Joey Wendle set the stage for the two-run double by Adam Giacalone to make it 13-0 Steamers.
Petersburg cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when John Cleary led off with a double. A single moved Cleary to third and he scored on the double play ball off the bat of leadoff man Ryan Parker. The scoreboard read 13-1 Steamers.
Petersburg brought home its second run of the game on an error by Tim Saunders in the top of the seventh after two singles to begin the inning to make the score 13-2 Steamers.
The final rally attempt for the Generals came in the eighth inning. With Eddie Perkins on the mound for Edenton, Petersburg began with back-to-back singles. A fielder's choice followed that put runners on first and third with one out. An error by Nathan Burns in right field brought home the first run of the inning for Petersburg. After a walk to Nick McQuail, Ryan Parker hit a two-run double and Tony Montalbano followed with an RBI groundout to make the score 13-6 Steamers.
Tim Saunders hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth to score the final run of the game; 14-6 Steamers was the final.
Drain improved to 2-0 with six innings pitched, one run (earned), he walked three and struck out five in the effort.
J.T Wauford fell to 0-5, lasting only two innings and giving up six hits, ten runs (all earned), he walked eight and struck out two in the loss.
Overall in the game the Steamers were issued as many walks as hits they picked up; 12 and they struck out 13 times, stranding ten runners on the base paths.
The Steamers travel to Petersburg tomorrow to play the Generals for the sixth time in 2011; they are currently 5-0 against their North Division rival.
The Edenton Steamers compete during the summer at Historic Hicks Field in downtown Historic Edenton, North Carolina. Heading into its 15th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 44 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
