Marlins Handle \'Wolves, Assume 2nd Place

Morehead City, N.C. - The Marlins defeated the Florence RedWolves at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City on Friday night by the convincing score of 9-4. The Marlins improve to 15-14 overall and-since they now lead the season series with Florence three wins to two-take over sole possession of second place in the Coastal Plain League South.

Morehead City's bats got warm right away again, as the Marlins put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone for the entire evening. First baseman Chase McDonald only needed one pitch to blast a three-run home run into left-center for his fifth round-tripper of the season. The Marlins leadoff batter reached base in six of their eight offensive frames as every player that entered the box reached safely at least once, including pinch-hitters.

Marlins ace Shawn Armstrong also threw efficiently to pick up his third win of the season (3-1). Armstrong went six strong, giving up one run on two hits and striking out six. Armstrong's ERA drops to 2.16 on the year, and the right-hander from East Carolina University ranks in the League's top ten with 34 strikeouts.

The Marlins turn around and play the RedWolves at American Legion Ballpark in Florence on Saturday, returning to Big Rock Stadium to host the Edenton Steamers for the only time this season on Sunday. It will be another Time Warner Cable Super Duper Sunday, as well as JingGianni's Night at the field. Sunday's matchup will begin around 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6 o'clock.

The Morehead City Marlins are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
