Steamers Shut-out in Peninsula

July 12, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

HAMPTON, VA - The Pilots (17-21-1, 5-6) scored an unearned run in the first and seventh innings and Brandon Vick limited the Steamers (25-11, 7-3) to four hits in seven innings on the mound in the 2-0 loss on Thursday at War Memorial Stadium.

Left-handed pitcher Brandon Vick of Peninsula and Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher College) of the Steamers locked horns in a pitcher's duel at War Memorial Stadium. Through six innings Peninsula had a 1-0 lead on just two hits while the Steamers had picked up just three hits against Vick.

D'Amato had successfully pitched himself into trouble and been able to dance out of it with a little help from his defense in the first and second innings. After issuing a walk to Nick Thompson, Josh Eldridge singled him to third base with a wild pitch in between. Cameron Gibson reached on an error to the Steamer shortstop Michael Massi (Mercer University) and that gave Peninsula a 1-0 lead.

Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) continued the strong play of the Steamer outfield when he threw out Roberto Duran trying to tag from third base on a Zac MacAneney fly ball. The assist was Beaird's seventh of the season and 16th overall for the Steamers as a unit. The Steamers have now thrown out six runners at the plate in their last six games, with the only game where they didn't complete the feat being on July 10th in Wilson. They did it twice last night at home against the Pilots and four of the six runners thrown out at home have been Pilots.

D'Amato pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, four walks and five strikeouts. He gave way to Kevin Bibler (Southern Polytechnic State University) in the seventh.

Peninsual pushed across another unearned run against Bibler after a lead-off bunt single by Roberto Duran. DJ Martinez bunted him up to second and a wild pitch moved Duran to third. He came home on an error by Adam Kirsch, the first baseman, with the infield in to make it 2-0 Pilots.

Vick was just a bit better than D'Amato, pitching seven innings allowing no runs on four hits, six walks and six strikeouts. Vick picked his second win of the season, improving to 2-3.

Despite out hitting the Pilots, Edenton was unable to score in the ninth inning against Stephen Richter, who earned his second save of the season, in the 2-0 win for Peninsula. Edenton got a lead-off walk to Meadows and Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) singled, but both runners were left on the base paths in the ninth inning.

Jason Kanzler snapped his 14 game on-base streak, going 0-for-five. Of the Steamers six hits in the game, three of them were doubles, one each by Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University), Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) and Wes Meadows (Otterbein University). Meadows went one-for-one and was on base all four times he came to the plate, taking three walks. Thursday's loss marks the first time all season the Steamers have been shut-out.
