Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers (19-8, 1-0) set two season highs with 15 runs and 18 hits in a 15-4 drubbing of the Morehead City Marlins (10-18, 0-1) to begin the second half of the Coastal Plain League season on Saturday at Historic Hicks Field.
Right-handed pitcher Kevin Bibler (Southern Polytechnic State University) made his second start for the Steamers, squaring off against right-handed pitcher Matt Ogden of the Marlins, who made his fifth start of the year. Each pitcher came into the game with a 1-0 record.
The Steamers gained a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first when Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) reached on an error and then moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt by Ogden. Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) reached on a fielder's choice and then moved to second base when Kanzler was caught in a rundown. Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) singled Kraemer to third base and Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) knocked him in for the 1-0 lead. On Branigan's single Camporeale, the trail runner was thrown out at the plate.
A two-run home run by Jarret Higgins off Bibler in the top of the third gave the Marlins a 2-1 advantage. They would never lead again in the ball game.
In the bottom of the third Edenton put together it's most productive inning of the season. Kanzler led-off with a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2. The long ball was Kanzler's fifth of the season and third in as many games for Edenton. Kraemer was issued a walk and Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) singled. An error on the single allowed Kraemer to go to third and Fernandez to second base. Camporeale continued his hot hitting with a two-run double to make it 4-2 Steamers. Branigan followed suit with an RBI double and it was 5-2 Steamers. Wilbur Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) singled and after an Adam Kirsch line-out, DJ Johnson (Mercer University) reached on a fielder's choice that moved Branigan to third base. Nevarez was put out on the play. Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) reached on an error that scored Branigan to make it 6-2 Steamers. Kanzler came to the plate for the second time in the third inning and he singled to load the bases. Kraemer added the icing on the cake in the eight run third inning with a bases clearing double that made it 9-2 Steamers.
Kraemer is now on a nine game hitting streak, which sets the mark for the longest hitting streak by any Steamer this season.
Morehead struck back for a run in the top of the fourth off Bibler on back-to-back singles and an error by DJ Johnson that scored Robbie Rea and made it 9-3 Steamers.
Edenton put any and all chance of a Morehead City comeback to rest with a five run fourth inning against new Marlins pitcher A.J Goetz. Ogden pitched three innings and allowed nine runs (six earned) on ten hits, one walk and he struck out one batter in the loss. Ogden is now 1-1 on the season. Camporeale walked and stole his way to third. He was driven in on a single by Nevarez to make it 10-3 Steamers. Kirsch singled and then Johnson singled to load the bases. Robbie Zinsmeister connected for a big fly, his first of the year and the second grand slam of the season by a Steamer to wipe the bases clean and push the lead to 14-3. The four RBIs were also Zinsmeister's first of the year.
A lead-off single by pinch-hitter Sam Ott in the top of the fifth inning set the ground work for an RBI double by Chace Mitchell to make it 14-4 Steamers.
Edenton added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Fernandez double and an RBI single by Camporeale to finish the scoring at 15-4 Steamers.
Bibler pitched six innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on nine hits; he walked none and struck out four in the win. Bibler is now 2-0.
Right-handed pitcher Travis Huber (University of Nebraska) pitched two scoreless innings for Edenton, allowing just two hits and left-handed pitcher Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College) pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
Every Starting Steamer had a hit and scored a run in the win but Michael Camporeale had the best day overall at the plate going four-for-four with three singles, a double, and two runs scored and three driven in. Robbie Zinsmeister topped the RBI column with four and four Steamers in total had a multi-RBI game, to go with six Steamers that had a multi-hit game.
